Cowman I keep a dictionary right beside my computer, the problem if you don't know how to spell the word some times you can't find it in the dictionary. My big problem is and at 62 I don't worry about much is punctuation, because in english I was always thinking about getting out, and on the H, Super A, or F20. that was also true for history, math, etc. how ever I am not that bad in math.

Jim: No mystery about the math, you had to make money to survive.

How is the nice spring weather in MO doing. It is to be hoped, better than here in ON. It seem nice here but just can't get rid of that chill in the air, that could give shirt sleeve weather.

A just as usefull book to keep handy besides a dictionary is a thesaurus...that way, if ya can't spell what you're trying to say, you can come up with another easier-to-spell word that means the same thing! I do, however, usually just proofread as I type. Might take a little longer doing all the backspacing and re-typing, but it's usually pretty legible when I'm done(I hope!).

It's good to proof read and try to make as few mistakes as possible. But the main thing is to be able to make the message understandable.

I think the average person can read through and get the meaning. Main thing is that we are out here to ask and share.

Cowman, this has been an interesting discussion and I have enjoyed it. I taught for 31 years and I am capable of making a spelling error but mostly it is my inability to type properly, a skill that I never needed during my career. There is educational merit to what has been said and that is waiting to proof read. The human brain sees things in patterns and when you start to proof read your brain will pattern what you had intended to say..thereby causing you to miss an error for a second time. If you give yourself time your brain is less likely to pattern and going back 5 minutes later you are more likely to see the error. We are all likely to misspell words that are not familiar to us like sir names, names of companies, brand names and the like. Slang is another area in language use, but many experts feel that slang is the workhorse of a language , conveying a meaning that is readily understood in perhaps less words. I don't have a problem with people making errors and often typos are evident on their own...when I taught I graded a student on his creativity and the message he or she was conveying to me, spelling was secondary but it was also something that we worked on to try and improve....having said all that when someone is talking old tractors spelling isn't important..its like an accent..I still understand..... ..thanks everyone for this discussion, I enjoyed it, now I got to go feed the stock and they don't care whether its hay, hey or heigh or whether its a bale or a bail..... If Kim would get us a spell check for this site we all probably would. Have asked before.

I read mine too and agree with the waiting to re-read but I am busy doing something else by then. I try hard not to misspell (unless I'm goofing off) but not hard enough to keep a dictionary in my lap. Figured you guys&gals would understand.

Had one guy say that he does it in WORD with that spell check and then posts it. That's work. I'm here for R&R.

I try to make sure my posts are all spelled correctly, But dont hold anything against anyone who spells poorly, alot of the people I work with that make 26 $ plus an hour cant spell their own name ! figure that one out.

Nope. But my Wife sure does. She can catch my bad grammer and miss spelling from a mile away.

She just says. " your not going to send that like that are you?" I say yea sure. Why?
Oh well some one has to have the brains. Might as well be her.

I have to admire everyone who spells well but I just can't bring myself to worry much about spelling here on this fourm. I suppose somewhere else would be the place to learn to spell right but you sure can't beat this for a place to learn really great things about my Farmall!

My problem is not spelling, it's the fingers pushing different letters than my brain tells them to!!

Actually I have found the only people that have a hard time reading what you write are the ones who disagree with you but dont have a good agument. So they resort to attacking your grammer.

Cowman: I proof read it all couple of times,and even then some still get by me. I had one the other night, I had it ready to click the post message, I could see THE spelled THR. I pushed the back button to make changes, and do you suppose I could find it, no sir. I had to bring it back up again for posting the write down exactly where it was. I guess I had been on here too long that night. At least that is what my good wife tells me.

Cowman, I try to proof read before I hit the submit button, however, what gets me in more trouble than i would like to admit is when I go back and proof read, and find I need to amend a sentence and insert a word or phrase, knowing full well I need to delete a word or phrase. Then end up sending the whole text which after I realize it is too late, and makes no sense. It would have been better had I left the original text alone. It makes a feller want to go sit in the corner with one of those megaphone hats securely in place.

I do, as I can't spell either. But I use a slightly different method. I type my responses in Microsoft Word, run spell check and cut and paste it into the followup comments. But I still get an occasional error. Loren

Good one Cowman! I have a hard time with spelling. I do proof read but I agree with Wardner:"The only effective remedy is to wait several hours to proof read. I proof read and edit several times before posting but the errors still pop up. I used the word "matter" when I meant "manner" the other day. It wasn't a typo because the letters are not near each other on the keyboard.

The only effective remedy is to wait several hours to proof read. The interval lets your brain refresh and delete the previous work product. It makes a "differense", or is that "differencein".
