Help...I have a 1949 M which the starter has gone
bad on. I was able to identify the Starter part number with no problems but I am having problems
identifying what looks to be a Starter Solenoid.

I has two terminals one on each side where the Battery cable and Start Cable connect and two small connection on top marked with a I and S.

I have gone through the Service Manual and could find this part mentioned any where.

Is this a after mark add on? If this part is standard what is the P/N and where can I get it.

Any help with this is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Pete

When Ih started using push button starting, 300's 400's That is when the I/ignition terminal was used. As far as a 6or 12 volt starter, the Delco Parts book lists the one on my M for either voltage. Only problem I have ever had was one morning itwas 20 below when I tried to start my M it snapped the end off the shaft between the bendix and the armature.

There was no solenoid used just a mechanical sw with a large button mounted behind the steering post one lead went to the starter and the other to the battery and a L-shaped lever on the operaters side of the steering post that you pushed with your foot. None from the factory had a hand operated device and no soleniod operated devices were used for starters. The battery side of this switch had a lead going to the oval shaped housing that operated lites, voltage to the dist and charging circut.

Thanks Bob M for the wiring diagram and the info.

One more question, the Part# on the Starter
is 1107427 which is a Starter for a 6 Volt system.

Would this stater work in the 12V system or Should I be looking at a 12 V replacment If the 12 V convertion was done.

Sorry for the questions, But I have had nothing
but problems with this tractor since I bought it and I want to fix it the right way.

Pete

You will not find a 12V starter for any of these old tractors. We all just run 12V through the 6V windings. Normally this is not a problem if the tractor starts right up. If you are spinning the starter over for very long you can over-heat the windings. Let the tractor sit awhile until the starter cools down and then try it again.

Pete - Someone added that solenoid switch. The original starter did not have a solenoid - it had a mechanical (pull rod actuated) switch mounted directly on the starter.

Presuming your tractor has been converted to 12 volts a standard ("Ford style") solenoid will work. Hook the battery and starter cables to the two heavy terminals (doesn't matter which ones). Connect the smaller wire from the push button switch to the "S" terminal on the solenoid. If there's a ballast resistor in the ignition primary, run another wire from the solenoid "I" terminal to the coil side of the ballast resistor as shown in the diagram (punch below). Or you can leave the "I" terminal unconnected if you prefer - it'll work OK either way.

If you use the I terminal, connect it to the output on resister. It will send 12V to coil when the solinoid is activated. It will supercharge the sparkplugs when starting the tractor.
