ADVERTISEMENT I know these are going to be some silly questions but..... here it
goes!

I have a Farmall at my cabin in the Ozarks, but I don't know the year
or model. It looks similiar to some of the SuperA photos on this
forum, but I'm not sure. How can I go about getting this
information? Where are the numbers on the tractor to look? My
father bought this from a local out in the middle of nowhere years
ago. Since his passing I have been attempting to get it to run
reliably. It has set for 10 years. It will start and run for about
5 minutes, starts sputtering, then dies. If I wait for about 10 to
15 minutes it will start again and repeat. It has clean gas, I have
replaced the settling bowl, plugs, and plug wires. Not sure if this
is a points issue or what.

Also, where are some of the better sources for parts?

I truely appreciate any assistance.

Thank you in advance,
Mike in KC, MO

As has been pointed out, it could be either fuel or ignition. Check your spark (by pulling a wire and seeing what spark jumping to ground looks like) before running the engine. Run it until it quits then immediately look at the spark again. If it is about the same, that isn't the problem. If it has gotten a lot weaker, one of the ignition problems mentioned is probably the problem.

Another test is to run it until it starts to quit and then carefully squirting a little starting fluid into the intake. Only use a little, it goes a long way. If the engine picks up, the problem is fuel. If so, one of the mentioned ares may be the problem. It could also be a problem with the float or float valve.

If the tractor looks generally like an A, it might also be a Cub. The Cub serial plate is located near the steering gear. The tractor would look like one of the pictures on the page linked below.

Change the condensor first. Next time it dies take the drain plug out and see if there is gas in the carb. If it runs that long before dying it is not gas.

Mike, could be coil could be in the carb, but I would bet a buck that your problem is in the shut off valve assembley (that white metal piece that holds your fuel bowl) turn the gas off remove the bowl ,turn the gas back on see if you get a good stream of fuel, if not take a small piece of wire and run it up through into the tank and see if your flow improves, sounds like when you have a full bowl of fuel the engine will run but as it runs you draw more gas out of the bowl then the tank can replace,I faut that for about 3 weeks on my cub, about drove me to start drinkin and swearin again, good luck

Michael, It could be a fuel problem, but sounds more like coil failure. A bad coil will run cold but as it warms up will fail causing shut down. Therefore, that is the first place I'd be looking.

Sounds like you have a fuel delivery problem. The tractor runs out of gas and then after 5 to 10 min. enough fuel flows into the carb for it to run again.

To check this remove the drain plug from the bottom of the carb. You should have a continious flow that does not taper off. If it does taper off to just a small amount then this is your problem.

Where the fuel line goes into the carb there is a brass fitting that the fuel line screws into. Remove the line and then the fitting. You will find a screen filter that is probably dirty. If this doesn't fix the problem then you probably have dirt pluging the neddle valve and you will have to remove the carb and clean it. The carb is very simple to disassemble, clean and reassemble. GO FOR IT.

GOOD LUCK

Your serial number plate is on the side of the seat support if it is an A or Super A. You can then get year from serial number section of this forum.

Steel Wheel Ranch>Link

Binder>Link Books (for instruction manual)

Carter & Gruenwald (in Wisconsin)

Just a start...there are dozens of places around the country where you can find parts.

I'd try to eliminate a fuel delivery problem.

something dropped into tank that plugs drain hole.

sediment in the fuel line that impeeds fuel flow just enough

Chunk of rust in tank that plugs drain hole.

Yep. Sounds like a bad coil. They will run fine till they get a little warm, they go south on you. Electric problems are nototious for that. They look good on the outside so you go on to something else just to find out that it was the first or second thing you looked at.
