What causes this on a 400? I have replaced the clutch/ TA and some transision gears. The clutch linkage is adjusted to the manual specs.
It grinds when shifting from R to 1st the worst. 2nd is not so bad.
I would assume that I still need some fine tuning of the clutch linkage. Because shouldnt the transmision gears not be turning at all when you ingage the clutch? I do have some play in the clutch pedal. It slops from side to side so maybe I need to have a little more push in the pedal to compessate. Just wondering what you guys have done.

Don't overlook the possibility that the clutch disk may have distorted while it was being installed if the splines were not lined up and it was forced together.

It should shift with only minimal or no grinding when shifting out of one gear into another, at least at idle, if you don't let out the clutch in between gears. It will almost always grind slightly if the trans is in neutral, and you push the clutch in and immediately shift into any gear. It takes the gears a few seconds to stop turning.
