Farmall M Hydraulics Problem

Hydraulics question on a Farmall M. I have set up the belly hydraulics on my M to raise a hydraulic disk harrow, running a hose from the port on the right side of the tractor to the cylinder on the harrow. The first time I lift the harrow, it works fine, at a medium idle. The next lift I have to open the throttle a bit more. The third lift I have to use more gas. By the 4th or 5th time it won’t lift the harrow even with the engine racing at full throttle. I’ve drained and refilled the “lift-all” with new hydraulic fluid. The level is fine. Anybody got any ideas how to fix it?

It sounds like you will have to drop the pump, pull the back part off and once in there take the actual pump apart. Inside you will find some shims , take out 1 or 2 . then reasemble it with a new gsaket. That should take care of it. I use IH Hytran in my 2 Ms. Good Luck, Boyd

If you have hydraulic oil in the system then that is most likely the problem. It works when its cold but when it warms up it won't lift anything. The oil needs to be 30 or 40 wt non detergent oil. Make sure you have 6 quarts in it.

Thanks -- I will drain it again tomorrow and try it with 6 qts of 40 weight oil. The old manual does say to use the same oil that you use in the engine -- maybe they were right.

I have a w400 with the same hydraulic problem, once it gets warm, the lift goes down. I have hydraulic oil in the system. Do you recommend the non-detergent 40W oil for this system as well?

I have done the same thing to my Farmall M, but I connected to the left side. Does your right side have two ports to hook up too.

Mine actually looks like it has two ports on the right side, the rear port has a rigid line going to the back and the front one doesn't even have a cap on it so I'm not sure what it is. I haven't gotten to using/checking out the hydraulics on this tractor yet. Did any M's actually have two ports on the right side?

One of the ports one the left side was delayed so it would raise the rear implement after the belly implement

yeah, I was talking about the right side. I'm familiar with the left side's double ports and how they work, just not sure about the extra port I seem to have on the right side.

may sound like a stupid question and I'm no expert, but have you checked the air breather on the cylinder? Might want to recheck the level again just to see how it is. What fluid did you fill it with?

The cylinder on the harrow is a 2 way type, and the second hose has been opened as a vent. I filled the system with NAPA hydraulic fluid. I had earlier tried overfilling the the system, thinking that perhaps the cylinder and hoses needed more fluid than the system would normally supply, but the result was the same.
