Farmall A Brakes Question

Several years ago I restored a Farmall A and now use it with a belly mower. In a tractor restoration book I bought they said that if the brake linings were oil soaked from leaking seals you could burn them off and they would be OK to use. Mine were like new, but all oil soaked from the seals leaking. I took the torch and heated them up until they started burning. Then I let them burn until all the oil was burned off. They looked like new except for the blue cast to the metal parts. I then put them back on the tractor with my new seals. Now the brakes are so touchy that if I step on the brake pedal more than just lightly touching them the wheels lock up. Is there some component in the brake friction material that would be burned out so they would be this way. Has anyone else had this happen to them. The brake linings are so difficult to change on an A I have just lived with it, but it is irritating especially when I tear up the lawn stopping. Roger

Put it in 1st gear, open up the throttle, start moving and apply the brakes. This might help break them in alittle.

Try adjusting the Pedal out some...also, isnt there som sort of spring thingy on the linkage its adjustable, and regualtes how much pressure is put on the band. Mine are rusted up in my C, so when backing it off the trailor, It locked the wheels up, by just barely touching the pedal.

Its like ALL OR NOTHING right?

Wd40 the little spring things if you have them, or soften them up by adjusting them.

I hope im making sense, I dont know much about A's
