On this 686 and it’s auxiliary battery. I can see holes in the floorboard for tie-down rods.

Am I to assume that I'm missing a battery cover or box here?

Thanks,

Allan

Allan, from the looks of the parts book, there should be a base that bolts to to the platform, and a angle-iron hold-down at the top that attaches to the base with tie-down rods. On the 686 that we used to have, the previous owners removed the right step and replaced it with a battery box, and put both batteries down there. That really worked well, it was easy to get to, and got the batteries close to the starter, where they belong.

Thanks KB,

That really helps. I knew there must have been something there originally.

Also, I don't think any of these old gals came with a right step, as far as I know anyway.

The mounting holes/bosses are drilled in the tranny housing, just no step. Maybe they were an option, dunno.

Thanks,

Allan

KB: That is exactly where I had the batteries on my 656, below floor board level and on each side of starter. I don't think I had 4' of battery cable in total. I initially put the batteries down there so I could use larger batteries. I also installed a cab at same time and could see, that servicing the batteries would become a night mare, in the factory location.

Allan I am not that familar with a 686, from the other posts it sounds like a battery sets there. Proably it had a frame that set on top of the battery open in the center, with two rods bent on one end in L shape to hook in the holes you show and a wing nut screws on other end at the frame. I had a 544 gas only 1 battery it was under the steering wheel the frame was long gone, but I would guess it had one when it was new. My 706 and 756 the batterys are long and narrow. They set at front of platform on each side the main body, this is what they have to hold them down.

Jimmy,

Yes, my 766 and 966 had those side mounted batteries as well; I kinda liked that neat look.

I've just never been around one of these "open air" 86 series before and know of no one around here who has one (Gotta have the cabs, ya know).

Thanks for the effort tho,

Allan

The battery cables would have rubber boots on them at the clamps

Question number two, is that even the correct location for the battery?

Hi Rusty,

Yep, they (my Red Mechanics) tell me that this model came from the factory with that extra battery setting back there.

I can't imagine it shipping without a cover tho.

The two holes in the floorboard are "staggered" like a normal battery hold-down usually is; one on one corner and another katty-wamphus on the other corner.

Thanks for the hollar,

Allan
