Farmall M with torque amplifier - questions

I have use of a huge Farmall, told that it's an "M". It also says "tourque amplifier" towards the back of the hood/cowling near the drivers area. My guess is it's a 1954. I can't find the serial number plate - maybe it's been removed?
It starts and runs smooth and quiet. But it is very low on oil and the oil is black, so I want to change it and the filter. What weight and type oil should I use? Any other thoughts? It has a 6 foot Squealer bush hog attached, just what the 15 acres of old fields need. I'll be sharpening the blades, as they are duller than dull and beat on pretty hard.
Any advice on best way to sharpen?
Thanks.

If that "tourque amplifier" on the cowling is made of metal, it is not a Super M-TA.

I will check Monday when I'm back at the farm.
If it "is made of metal" then what is the tractor?
Is it a 400 as one post thinks?

I will only use Case IH #30 Low Ash oil in a gas engine. That is what's reccomended, and I do believe that it is very good oil. Pretty cheap insurance, I think. If you use a detergent oil, you could plug the suction screen, or the filter. Do you have any more info on this tractor? Regards, FD

I know very little about it, other than it seems to be in very good shape. The owner died in late 90's and I'm trying to get hold of the fellow who used it the last couple years, to see if he knows what oil was last used in it. It's 180 miles north of me at my farm right now, or I'd be out looking at all numbers I could find. The serial plate must be there somewhere (left of clutch housing?) but have not found it yet. Best guess is it's a 54 SM-TA - but one guy thinks it's a 400..... .....
Thanks for your help.

That sound more like a 400 to me than a M.The Torugue Amplifier part that is.DONT SHARPEN THE BLADES,REPLACE THEM AND THE BOLTS THAT HOLD THE TWO SECTIONS ON!Ever see a blade go flying by your head because the blade was out of balance and broke the bolt!I have, and it aint fun!IH dealer should have the filter.

Filter is easy. Go to your local parts or C-IH store & ask for a filter for SM-TA. They should have one in stock. Make sure you get a gasket with it. Remove the drain plug @ bottom of filter housing, have an empty soup can ready to catch the old oil. Crack the large bolt on the top of the filter to allow air to enter. Let it drain until all drips stop. Remove the bolt, wiggle the canister loose from the bottom, remove it taking the filter out at the same time. Check to make sure you know what direction the filter goes back in. Throw away the old filter, clean everything up & remove the old gasket from the groove where the canister sets into the housing. It'll probably come out with great difficulty, if its been in there a while. BE SURE YOU GET IT ALL. A seal pick works great to get them out. Wet the new gasket with clean oil & install it in the grove, put in the new filter, install the canister & long bolt & tighten appropriately. You are now good to go, as soon as you put oil in the crankcase. Check for leaks after you run her for a few minutes. They'll leak a little once in a while, usually all it takes is to tighten the bolt a little more IF YOU GOT ALL THE OLD GASKET. Be sure to change oil in the can on the bottom of the air cleaner, they are usually about 1/2 full of dirt, make sure you scrape it all out. Takes the same thing you use in the engine if its multi-grade or 10W if you use straight weight. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

I would go with a 15W-30 oil or HD30.

I don't recommend sharping the blades on brush cutter. You want the blades dull, as to shred the brush and not leave stubs that will give you flats.

So I take it detergent oil is ok. Thanks.

What I really need, I guess, is a mower and not a bush hog, as it has been bushed hogged a couple times a year for the last couple years and only small (1/4 inch) stuff plus tons of weeds are left. So since I don't want to spring for a mower right now, would sharpening the blades of the bush hog make sense?

Thanks.

When unsure of detergent oil or not, I always drop the oil pan and clean it out real good along with the oil pump suction bell. Then you should be able to run the detergent oil no problem. This is also a good time to take off the valve cover and check for dirt and relash the valves.

You should check the previous owner and ask what type oil they used. If they used non-detergent, I'd stay with non-detergent. (straight 30). If it used detergent, I'd go with 15w40. It sounds like you have a Super M with the torque amplifier.

1954 Super M-TA; 26,924 were made until discontinued on 15 Oct 1954. Should be buco parts.
S/N's ran 60001 - 83523. On the bushhog, inspect the flail(blade) pivot bolts for any wear or cracking. Replace with new equivalent hardware if needed. If you half-fast put on a better cutting edge on the blades the assembly blade pairs must be balanced. One of the other strings said it best put on new rotating hardware and watch(don't watch) the flailing blades stay on their mounts.
Good luck.
