I had my gear shifter off on my Cub and my tranny oil is a light brown, almost like a diarrhea colour. Anyway, is that bad and if so, where do i drain my oil and add new oil and what kind of oil should i put in?

Sorry if I offended anyone by trying to instill a little common sense in this fella and make him think. Maybe by reading his manuel hopefully he would take a few minutes and read the part about only hitching a load to the drawbar. Wish the guy down the road had read that section, he is dead now and I'm going to miss him a lot. (hooked put to a stump with the chain running from the drawbar, under the tractor pulling in reverse. Amazing how quick these things will flip over backwards when the leverage is just right) I'm been around our favorite toys for 49 years using them for both for fun and work and fortunatly have yet to have a major accident because I have always tried to use common sense. Always worked for me....and yes I still refer to the manuel quite often. And by the way...the followup message from "good" was from me. Follow up consouling after the shock treatment.

Hey commonsense....I agree. If he hasn't taken the time to figure out where to drain the oil and put in the fresh he shouldn't be endangering himself and other folks.

Hey Farmallman,
I'm embarassed to read the kind of crappy answer you got first-- I hope it's not your first experience on these forums as most folks are pretty nice and decent enough to answer your questions courteously rather than blather on and insult you like that other fellow did.

To answer your question, it does sound like your tranny oil is contaminated with water, rust, etc. If your tractor is uncovered out in the elements it's likely that some rainwater entered by way of the shifter. Even if it is under cover, condensation can collect inside it and corrupt your oil. I believe your fill plug will be on top of the tranny casting in front of your seat and just behind the shifter (I may be wrong.) Your drain plug ought to be in the back near the PTO/belt pulley and at about the lowest point possible in the tranny housing. A guy named Rudi has a great site with manuals for the Cub and its implements online at the following URL:

Link

He's a real nice and helpful fellow-- you'll see him post here on Cub matters from time to time.

I hope this info helps. Bst of luck wit hyour tractor,

Darren

The law of gravity applies to old tractors as well as anything else, look for a drain plug in the bottom and a fill plug in the top. Even better....buy a manuel before you hurt yourself. I can't believe you would actually climb up in the seat of one of these fine old machines without taking the time to learn a little about them. You had best sell it before you hurt yourself or someone else.

I have had ownership in about 8 - 10 tractors in the past several years of which I have had manuals for most of them. I also use this site frequently to ask what you call "DUMB QUESTIONS", which I believe this site is all about. Give guys like myself a break.

Good, your oil has gotten some moisture in it either from a leak or condensation. Pretty common. It needs to be changed. Just read the manuel and the archives of this site and you will be fine.
