Hi, Was just wondering if anyone has experience with Fire Crater pistons, specially on the 100-140 series Farmalls. On the Carter & Gruenewald site, they list the proper size Fire Craters as 3/16 bore and I though it should be 3/18 bore for a Farmall 100.

I talked to their customer rep, and he said that the fire crater design gives better compression, burns fuel more efficiently less carbon build up. The only downsides were higher cost and it was harder to handcrank. Orientation is the same as normal. Anyone try this out or have any comments on the Fire Crater in general. Was it an aftermarket or did IH make these? Thanks Ramon

I just rebuilt a 1940B that is still crank start (with a mag) and I put a set of Domed pistons in and it starts great! Plus I put a 140 head on it and that gave it a little more compression.

The parts I used are Tisco. You can buy them off of this site I think but I got mine thru a guy in Nebraska. I have used 2 of there kits so far and had great luck! 1 in a super A 3 1/4 overbore and the 3 1/8 in the B both with High domes.

Shaggy So what do you think would be the correct size for a Farmall 100. Looking at the Carter and Grunevald site, they say the "3 3/16 Bore works for A-AV, Super A, 100, 200. But then the next line says that 3 1/8 Bore works for Super A-AV, C, 130, 230. It seems like a big inconsistency to me since I thought the 100 and 130 had the same size engine and also why would two sizes fit Super As? And you used the 3 1/4 so now it's even more confusing ;-)

Well from what I have learned from the people on here on from my own tinkering is this. A lot depends on the the size of the hole in the bottom of the block where the sleeve slips into and seals with a O-ring. Almost all B's and A's have a 3 5/16th hole and some of the early super A's. And that allows you to go to a 3 1/8 bore sleeve. But on the some of the later Super A's C's and 100 thru 140 etc. had a 3 7/16th hole in the block that would allow you to go to a 3 1/4 bore. I personally have never seen or used a 3 3/16 bore. Maybe someone else here has. Hope I helped a little. Shaggy

hi
ive put oversize crater domes and sleeves into a 140. where i work we have three 140's for mowing township roadsides. the first one (a first generation)i put regular size sleeves in,nad otherwise did a complete rebuild. the second one(a second generation)i put the oversize sleeves and crater domes in, and a complete rebuild. the third one ( a third generation) we just got and doesnt need any mechanical work yet.anyhow the second one with the crater domes is quite an animal. with the starter it starts easier, we have never hand cranked it. it doesnt take any more gas than the others, as far as i can tell. it sounds pretty neat also.

Hi Ramon I have fire crators in my SM M&W high domes in my H. I dont see any difference except for the 100 or so extra cubes. I bought a set of pistons from value built a few years back I think they called them step head. I had to take them to my IH dealer to get the wrist pins bushed and he said they were just as good as his IH but a lot cheaper. JON

Ramon IH made the fire Crater pistons, first to up the horse power of the older 4 cylinders they had 5 thousand high altitude for tractors in higher altitudes. The fire crater never increased the bore. When the 460 and 560 come out the piston was a fire crater for the gas.
