Bought a 450D for $800. Drove it home, but it pops out the exhaust.

When starting from cold, it does not pop but lots of blue smoke. As it warms up, the popping starts, a sharp crack, and the smoke quits. Loosening No 1 injector line stops the popping and does not affect the engine so it must be running on three. The previous owner says he replaced exhaust spring on No 1 by putting a rope in the cylinder to hold the valves up and not remove the head.

What are the possible problems? Is it probably a burnt valve but does not pop due to low compression until the temperature gets up?

If after warm up it is a steady “pop” in the exhaust (like every time the cylinder fires) I suspect that the exhaust valve gap is too tight. As the engine warms, the valve stem increases in length and the gap shrinks, possibly to nothing and then the vavle won't seal correctly. I would check the valve clearance (needs to be done with the engine up to operating temp) fist and make sure it is up to spec. If this isn’t the problem, you probably have an exhaust valve or seat that is going bad and as you mentioned is only showing up after compression comes up when the engine is warm.

Good luck!
