i just bought a 1958-60 farmall (the guy did not know). Now he stated he just rebuilt the tractor and it looks it. The problem is after running it any were from 30-45 min it starts to run ruff then shuts down. A moment later i am again able to start it and it starts right up but shuts down again this time without even putting the pto on.

The guy i got it from took it back to his shop andso far rebuilt the govener, and put a new coil on it and it is still doing it. He now wants to rebuild to carb again yet i am running out of time and need the tractor back ASAP.

Can anyone help.

thanks Mike

If it does not have a fuel pump a blocked vent in the gas cap can cause the same problem.

had the same problem with my 560 ***** I disconnected the gas line at carb and took compressor and blew back into tank **** MAKE SURE YOUR GAS CAP IS OFF and as little gas in tank as possible because gas is going to splash out *** after you do this make sure you put a in line fuel filter in ***** good luck dennis

I think there is a small pipe plug in the bottom of the carb. Carefully remove that plug and clean the hole then reinstall the plug only snug. When the tractor stops running remove the plug and observe the gas flow out the hole. It should be a continuous stream nearly the size of a pencil. Anything other, then the fuel supply line is clogging at the fuel tank. To fix the clogging problem install (solder or epoxy) a barb fitting in the fitting that screws into the fuel tank. Prior to inserting the fitting back into the tank connect a length of flexible gas hose to the barb and feed all that into the tank. Then fish the hose out thru the fuel filler hole in the tank and connect a generic inline fuel filter small enough to drop thru the fuel filler into the tank. Now you have a filter that you can service from time to time. I always buy the largest size filter I can get that will fit thru the filler hole, lasts longer.

You've most likely got a partly plugged fuel line or filter or outlet to the gas tank. If it was the coil, most likely it wouldn't restart for a while.

Most of the carbs on these tractors have a filter at their inlet which gets overlooked. A test is to (very carefully) check fuel flow when you're experiencing the problem by breaking the line or removing the plug which (may be) in the bottom of the carb's bowl. Sometimes the problem turns out to be a plugged vent on the gas tank.

Good luck, and let us know what you find out!

Make sure the ignition coil is the correct one.
Check for rust, junk etc. in the fuel tank.
Remove the valve cover and check the clearance on the valves.
