i bought a m farmall for a project tractor thinking it would be a good way to learn about a engine internally, i didn't expect to find what i did, the head ,cylider walls, oilpan had rusty hard particles that you can't hardly chisel off. now i don't know where to begin? what other engine would fit in this old gal if i decide to replace this one? thanks for any advice

Whenever I have replaced any engine block for a used one or have done a complete engnie rebuild, I've made it a practice to have the replacement or rebuild block boiled out and fluxed at a local machine shop. If the existing block appears to be good as it is being stripped, save yourself some time and money.
As you will find out, 'most everything about the Farmall engine is straight forward. Both when it is being torn down and when it is being rebuilt.

As mentioned, the sleeves are replaceable, and heads can be rebuilt.Sounds like some water may nave gotten into the engine. Before spending the money, invest a little into having things checked out.Find a good quality automotive machine shop and take the head and block to them, you may have to tear it down but some will do that too,for a price.Peices such as oil pans can easily be boguht easier and sometime cheaper than fixing up an old one. This is a real good way to learn about engines.Simply repalcing it with another would teach you anything more than how to replace one, unless you have to rebuild it toothen what would be the point in buying another engine.I once bought an engine for a H that I thought was shot. After spending about 1000 on the new eninge and rebuild kit,the guy I gavce the old engine to has it on his H running like a Cadillac!

Chris, I have rebuilt or restored a number of Farmalls in the past few years :o) You can replace the cylinders (sleeve's) pistons, rods, bearings, side covers, oil pump, rebuild the head, replace rocker arms all for a price. You can replace everything but the block if you want an even replace the block or buy an complete engine. What I do is have the block bead blasted, replace the cam an rod bearings along with the rings. Replace the sleeves an have the starter an generator rebuilt along with the Carb an buy the two gasket kits to put it all back together. with all this your looking at about 3k, 4k if you replace all the tires, sand blast the rims. All the bolts an nuts I take off the tractor are re-taped or chased, lock washers all replaced. If you work real fast you can do one in about six months start to finish, most I believe take over a year some alot more, it all depends on money an time. Just my three cents :o)

I had one that sat 12 years outside . . It's running and being fixed up. To keep it original you'd have to replace it with one from another M
Good Luck
