I'm getting my farmall A, and I need to know what manuals I need for restoration. Parts, Service or shop?

Thanks in advance!

When I got my Farmall A (off E-bay, no less) I bought the only manual I could find: The IH&T shop manual. It is definitely not sufficient for all the work that I have to do and have had to do. Through theses folks here on this discussion board, I ended up getting the Binder's books Shop Manual, Parts Catalog (which is easy to place into a 3 ring binder) and the Owners Manual. They are invaluable, however, don't use the I&T manual for TP just yet. It was the only book in the bunch that readily showed me where to look for the ignition timing marks on the flywheel with a reasonably good picture.

I have a `44 Farmall A that I have been using for mowing and all the manuals and more importantly, the assistance you can find here will not only come in handy, you will find yourself praising your favorite deity that you have all that. I mean it.

Christopher

To All: Thanks again for directing me to the right place to get a replacement PTO housing assembly. I am running and the parts only cost me $81.73 with tax.

Call those little sweeties over at www.wyomingben.com and they can fix you right up with any kind of manual that you need. I just got an operators and service manual for the Super A, reprint just like the original about 30 bucks each. The ladies are extremely helpful and delivery was prompt.

The I&T manuals are fine for experienced mechanics who know what they are doing. For me, the parts manual was more valuable. I also bought a used automotive engine rebuilding text book that really helped out a lot.

Get the operator's manual, parts, and service manual from Binder Books. The IT manual is an excellent supplement. For any repairs at all the parts manual is absolutely essential, unless you have a photographic memory for reassembly. It is also a great aid for getting parts, as you can give your Case-IH dealer the part number, and you will immediately know whether or not it is available -- no guesswork.

Are Binder books better than the ones available at the Case-IH dealer?

Both are reprints of the original manuals. Far as I know the Case-IH ones are photocopies, Binder's are digitally copied. I have both, Binder's diagrams are clearer. There is also another company that sells them -- you will regret it if you get those.

I bought some for another tractor I have from a company whose name starts with "J". The cost was high and the quality very poor. I was glad when I found other sources.

if you can try and find old original books. they are alot better than reprints and leave the i and t shop manuals where you found them unless you are a real good machanic they wont do nothen but get you in trouble they just tell you half of what you need to know toilet paper is better atleast it has a purpose

The original books and the reprints are the same, except for the smudges on the originals. I&T manuals do have some things that are not in the IH manuals, and vice versa. The diagrams are taken from the IH manuals.

IT Shop manual Number IH-8. Recently purchased one for $24.?? including tax. Available at most farm/tractor supply stores or at the top of this page. This manual will give you a really good start - must have.

Check the web. www.cleancompute has the operators manual for the Cub on line - free. Do some more web searching. You may find the operators manual on line - free. Most of the operator's information on the Cub will apply to the A.

I wouldn't get the parts manual at this time. Most parts are available on line, at the local auto parts store and the Case/IH dealer. You will need the model, year and perhaps serial number when ordering parts. Later, If you decide on a major repair, the parts manual will come in handy. It will show how the part/s go together.

Restoration: There are a number of books on the subject. I would wait until I had the tractor running and in decent mechanical shape before I started the cosmetics.

The A is a nice little tractor. Best wishes on your "project".
