can anyone tell me a good way to paint the black backround in the front farmall emblem. I am just finishing restoring a 1940 B and had to get a new front emblem for it. I painted it with a small brush and it didn't look good at all so I wiped it off and need to try another way. Thanks in advance . Steve

I've painted them with a small brush, without worrying too much about mistakes, then used a small piece of scotchbright pad to remove the paint from the high spots it wasn't supposed to be on. They came out looking good.

Are you sure that it is supposed to be painted? Seems like most of the grill emblems I have seen for the As, Bs, and Cs did not have a black background. The grill emblems for the H and M did have a blackground.

I painted one with a bright silver paint and was disappointed because it quickly faded to a dull finish. Maybe the aluminum will do better. I decided to buy a new one, which wasn't too expensive, especially compared to the time involved in painting.

Hi,

I restored an old one for my H. I found it at an auction on an old beat-up grill and the emblem was as rusty as the grill. I wire-brushed the emblem down and painted the whole thing with rattle-can aluminum. I then waited a few days to let the aluminum get really dry then I masked off all the letters and other raised parts using masking tape and cutting all the excess off the letters with an exacto knife. I then sprayed the black using a glossy-black rattle-can. It turned out looking pretty good. Only if you follow this procedure, please don't do what I did at this point. I very carefully layed my 'masterpiece' where I thought it would be safe, then promptly proceeded to spray some other loose parts with IH 2150 red and get overspray all over it. Sooo, I got to repeate the whole procedure from the wire brush to all the masking and trimming. Hope this helps,
Larry

Larry, if that emblem was rusty, I would bet that it is a steel emblem from an H that was built during the war years. I was at an auction last winter and tryed to buy one of these, it also was quite rusty but otherwise in good condition. I quit bidding at $25, I think it ended up bringing around $50.

The painting is the easy part. This one is from my '48 H. It was in need of major straightening.

The whole thing was rattle can painted black, and when dry it was rubbed off only the high points with a rag slightly dampened with solvent.

My '51 M has a steel emblem... built long after the war.

I have a 52 H with a steel emblem. I wonder if this has anything to do with Korea?
