Any idea if this forum will ever be updated to a more user-friendly style, like most of the other forums I'm on?

It's hard to find things when topics aren't sorted by reply date....

:(

I frequent a forum where the post that gets a reply is bumped to the top. That's Ok there, I like it, but the forum is not that busy. Over here it could take your new post to page 3 and the history channel in a hurry. This is a busy forum. One problem with the format here is that the original post subject line is repetitive and takes up space with no new information or value add other than the reply posters name. you have to expand. The subject line should at least serve double duty as an original posters messsage line and a reply posters reply line without the re: or subject automatically inserted. A short answer, one liner, could be written in right there. This post "forum update" sucks up half a page already. If it bumps to the top your new post (and hope for an answer) is almost immediately on page 2. If you don't expand it's rather boring, Forum update, forum update, forum update, forum update..... ... Then the other side. If you are a poster looking for an answer bumping to the top can be a good thing. You can see if you get a reply you come to the top. You can bump yourself to the top for another shot at an answer, quick and easy. There are trade-offs.
Many forums just list the subject line and original poster and you need to expand to see what's there. Advantage to that is a long thread doesn't take up the whole front page. Buming to the top won't bump you off page 1 so quickly. Disadvantage is it is hard to recall or recognize the thread behind the simple subject line. Conrad might be right, there may be a better way.
Change is hard.

Conrad-

I think this is a very effective way to do things. I'm not sure what you want.

Conrad: Me back again. So you want the most popular or most frequented threads up front. That is a very unfair attitude. Consider the guy who posts a question that not a lot of people know much about, or folks are just a bit uncertain how to answer. He or she have asked that question because they sincerely need an answer. To me this forum is not about seeing who can start the most popular thread. IT IS ABOUT HELPING ONE ANOTHER SOLVE OUR TRACTOR AND RELATED PROBLEMS.

I don't care whether the tractor is an H, an M, a 434, a Mogul, a W4, etc. They all deserve an answer and answers frequently happen on the first 3 pages. No question, these threads must be on calander dates in order for the two weeks. You are being very selfish. Popular threads with lots of posts are very easy to find, you scan the pages and they stick out like sore thumbs.

I personally make a practice of going through the pages, searching out the threads that have received no responce. I may not have the answer for the person, but will try and direct them to the answer, at least get some activity going that will spark someone's memory. I may just advise that person to repost, suggest a new title, suggest a bit different text, or just plain ask some questions. You just never know what you may get going for that person. Everyone on here deserves and should get a good answer.

Hugh, I don't want the forum changed, but as I said in my previous posts, some of the posts that don't have an easy answer fall off the page--but, there is a chance that some diligent person like yourself might see it and respond. The question then is at the top of the page, and someone who has the answer and hasn't read the forum for a couple of days might see it and add to it. As an example, I asked a question about a 350 HU last week. ZERO response-I bought it anyway. If only one person had answered, the question would have been at the top of the page, and perhaps someone else would see it. It is not always the most popular questions, those are the easy ones anyway. I see no advantage, other than that, to the other type of forum. Can work the other way too, unfortuantely. There is one silly thing on the RPM forum that has been on page 1 for two months, that's overkill. The people who post this forum are, in general more knowledgeable about the A through 560, on RPM it is mostly later tractors, or people who just like to talk.

This is already the most user friendly forum there is. Red power and IHCC forums both require that you log in before you can access the forums, since I have lost my password for both of these, I can't get in, and when I do the search for password thing, it comes back telling me that my e-mail address and user name are already being used by someone else. I don't even try anymore. If YT went to this sort of forum, I would have to give up on it also.

Most of the forums I frequent do not require signing on to access the forums. You just have to be signed in to post. Similar to what Kim is doing with the passwords now.

I don't think it's a bit deal to check the bullet to search by date then hit search again, but what I would like to see is the search refined. I think right now that it only goes down to 2 characters, I would like to see it go to 1. So if I searched for "Farmall M Clutch" I would only see Farmall M Clutch results. As it is now, it disregards the M, and searches for Farmall Clutch. I know that if you were doing the same search, but for an A, it would reveal lots, but if the search string could be entered so that you had a choice of searching exact phrase, or all (but in no particular order), I think that would work. Google probably isn't going to lend their code, but I think that is how they do it.

I don't post much, but I do read alot so I'll just give my two cents. Info Pop's Eve (the software you pointed out) is very nice, a few tech related fourms I read use it, but like CNKS point out it can be a bit "heavy" (that can be changed).

I'm not sure what software Kim uses here, it looks a lot like Matt's Scripts WWWBoard, which is probably the most popular Forum package ever, or it could be buit in house.

The threading is nice, the layout is clean, but the threads getting bumped down can be a bit of a bugger, but I like it overall.

That's the part I don't really like - the threads getting bumped down.

You can have a really good thread that goes for a long time, but it is on page 6....

Yes, it is relitively user friendly, and very fast as well. I guess it's a trade-off. If I don't come here for a week or so, It would be nice to see those heavy-replied to threads right there at the top. This also keeps people from "recreating" threads and starting the same one over and over.

Yes, it seems that way. I just like having the more popular (and usually most informative) threads hanging around the top, not stuck multiple pages back.

But that's just me... :)

I have used both kinds. I do like the ones that bump a topic back up to the top of the list when it gets a RE:
That is until I say some thing stupid. Then you are glad it hurrys up and gets to page 5

I haven't looked at either of those forums, but there is a "log in" forum on www.redpowermagazine.com. One advantage is that a reply to an older topic puts that thread at the top of the page, and the answers are sorted by the time of the reply. On this forum, due to the volume, some interesting threads that could use more discussion often get bumped down where no one sees them. The main problem of the RPM forum is for people like me who still have dialup -- it is slooow. This is the fastest forum I have seen.

I have to agree with CNKS and what he said about the speed of this forum for us dial-up users. I have tried some of the other forums with a fancier format and graphics, they take way too long to load. This forum is fast loading, easy to read, and has good people. Please don't change it.

SOMETIMES Im right opposite. Some days I can get right on,but most of the time I have to wait about 30 seconds, then if I say use the junp to to go to tractor talk, itll give me a erroe or page not found.Unfortunately, its my dial up!About the only other thing that I can honestly afford to do is go to a cable modem, but I refuse to back with Charter cable, they still owe me money from two years ago that hey wont pay,and I had thoguht of DirectWav,but the intiial setup is ridiculous!Cant wait for the new DSL line out here in the sticks,as I was typing this my connection just went out!
