Thanks so much for the overwhelming response but alas the tractor has been sold. Sounds like if I run across another one, it would suit me very well.

Thanks again to everyones posts!

Tommy

I have a 404 utility with power steering and I,m having trouble with the steering. When driving the tractor, I have no control over the steering. The front wheels go in every direction. When the engine is shut off, I can turn the steering wheel freely and the wheels do not turn. My local CaseIH service manager said the problem is in the flow diverter. Problem is, I can't find it on this tractor. It is suppose to be next to the ps pump which is located under the hood. I'll keep looking.

We have a 424 Diesel with power steering and love it. Great little tractor. It is a bit hard to start in the winter unless you give it a touch of ether. From what i have read, everyone says the manual steering ones were hard on the arms. We paid 1600 for ours but it needed work. I know a fellow in Michigan that has a parts tractor with factory power steering on it. Mahindra made a copy of it for many years, I believe.

Tommy,

The IH 154 diesel engine is easy to work on, reliable and powerful for its' size. If the 424 is anything like my B414, you are going to be happy with the tractor.

Mine does not have power steering, but I could use the workout, so it isn't that big of a deal for me.

The specs on the B414 and the 424 should be similar: 45 horse engine, 36 PTO and 32 drawbar.

I use 6 foot equipment with mine; brushhog, scraper blade, box blade, disk (although that could be bigger). Three point will pull posts, lift bales on a spear, even pick up the mower so I can sharpen the blades.

She is a little bit of a hard start in the winter, but the glow plugs on for a minute usually get the job done.

I don't know what the price of the one you are looking at will be, I paid about $2000 for mine and think I got a good deal. It is not pretty, but I don't look for pretty in a tractor, I like brute strength, which is what I got.

Hope this helps, keep us posted.

The 424 tractors are mid sixtys vintage. I believe from about 64 to 67. Could be wrong on the exact years. I used to own a gasoline version and really liked that tractor, but got rid it of mostly because it did not have power steering and it used a lot of gasoline when you pulled it hard. It easily handled a 6 ft bush hog in heavy grass. If fact, I think it was about as good on the bush hog as my much newer Kubota that is supposed to be 47 HP. However, the Kubota diesel uses less than half the fuel the gasoline 424 used. Also, I had some trouble with the 3 point lift and needed a tractor and came across the Kubota. The 424 lift was repaired and the thing sold. As I said, if it had the PS, I still would likely have it.

I have a 424, and LOVE it. I believe, about 37 PTO HP. My only complaint with mine is it does not have the factory power steering, and the ad-on CharLynn unit does not work very well, the way it is set up on my tractor.

Bob,

Please tell me about the Char-Lynn power steering on your tractor. We have had a 424 w/o power steering since it was new, and love the tractor, but it certainly has a lot to be desired when it comes to being able to steer it. What are the problems with the setup on yours?

Al

The factory power steering is totally hydralic. When the tractor isn;t running the steering wheel will just spin. No mechanical connection. I believe the charlyn is a type of power assit to the mechanical steering. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Al,

Are you familiar with the CharLynn torque generator for power steering? That is what mine has, install where the "hanger bearing" should be, between the steering shaft "U" joints.

It is fed off of a flow divider from the main hydraulic pump. Anyhow, I think the joints bind a little due to the extreme angle. The steering wheel does not turn smoothly throughout a whole revolution. SOMEDAY, when I get a little time, I'll re-work it.

Is this the same unit (or style of unit) used on the M/Super M, etc? So is the flow divider up close to the hyd. pump? Don't know how feasable a few pictures would be but I'm really curious as to your setup. I have always said that if I ran across a junked 424 with power steering I'd rob the parts off it and convert ours. Have never once thought about putting a Char-Lynn on it, believe that would be easier in the long run.

Thanks!
Al

The torque generator is probably the same as used on the other models. They mounted the flow divider on the LH side of the tractor "belly", in the way of the PTO lever.

OK, I did a google search and understand better what it would look like. Interesting conversion. Is the flow divider Char-Lynn or something else? You say it's in the way, can you not use the PTO lever now? I'm trying to remember where those hyd. connections would be on the side of the hydraulic housing, I wonder if you could tap in with hyd. hoses and move the divider under the hood or somewhere more convenient?

thanks again
Al

The flow divider is just mounted in a stupid place. It's not really near any original lines. It's a Gresen, I believe. They modified (butchered) the PTO lever to clear the valve. I have bought a new lever from CNH (made in India, obviously Mahindra) that I will install when I get the P.O.'s mess cleaned up.

I'd post a picture, but my digital camera came up missing a couple of weeks ago. I suspected it'd turn up, when one of the kids remembered what they'd done with it, but so far, no luck.

Email me, if you'd like a photo of the torque generator installation, when I replace the camera a week or two down the road.
