I have just unearthed my A from the grave after having it sitting for two years after I bought it and it didn't run. This my first project tractor. I overhauld the engine pistons, sleeves, the works with the exception of water pump. It started right up with no problem. Now when you drive it under a load like a small incline it sounds like it is popin back into the carb. Does the sound like a timing issue? There is no timing mark left on the flywheel. Rust took care of that! Also after a while it just shuts off and when restarted runs for a min or two and shuts off again. You let it sit for a while to cool and it will run again and the cycle starts all over again after a while.

I would be looking for fuel starvation problems as well. Next time it stops, jump off and pull the fuel line off the carb, you may find that there is no fuel coming out. This was a problem I had with my A when I was first got it. Found all kinds of dirt and bugs in the gas tank were getting caught up in the sediment bowl, after cleaning that tank up she never quit again. BUT, I"m not sure about the "popping" trouble. I had that and could never quite figure it out. My carb was not the original and alot of people were saying the tractor was running too rich. I"ve since sold it to a guy in Mich. who says it has been mowing every week since he bought it.

All the suggestions are possible explanations. It could also be a fuel starvation problem.

Just another thought. Double check the valve tappet clearence. Next time it quits pull one of the spark plug wires and see if you have fire.

Could be any of the other suggestions.

Had a similiar problem with my Tractor when I was putting it back together....turned out to be that I had the wires mixed up.....tractor did exactly what you said in terms of it poping through the carb.

My 2 cents.

The mark will still be on the flywheel, you just have to turn it a little at a time, use a screwdriver in the ring gear, and clean it as you go. Very narrow mark.

Also could be condenser. IT will do the same thing, when hot it will act up. My A did that and it was the condenser.

The first thought that comes to mind is did you replace your coil when you did all the engine work? Usually if the coil is bad, after the engine warms up it will just quit, then after cooling it will restart again. ---Jeff

I'm with you on the mag. Coils do the same thing and it gets frustrating trying to figure that problem out.

The mini backfire could be weak spark. Mag again.
