The H (Deco-Remy) starter seemed to hit a dead spot on the armature this weekend and with a charged battery would just grunt, no spin. Tearing it down I found the brushes worn, one to the brush anchor screw. These brushes are copper. Of the 16 Delco-Remy starters I have, this one is the first with copper brushes. Can I use the graphite type instead for the rebuild? The brush type has a mounting hole at the top instead of the attached wire. Maybe this type requires the copper to stand up to the torque of the anchor screw?

Red - I doubt the old brushes are copper. I recently replaced worn brushes in my Super H starter. Both the worn out and the new replacement brushes are made of a sort of copper-colored material. They seem about as soft as plain carbon brushes - suspect they're made of sintered graphite and copper powder.

Anyway suggest taking the old brushes to your friendly local starter/alternator shop. The one near me had new brushes in stock for $6 a set.

I think you're right about the sintered material. They are more dense than the ordinary graphite and will not scratch, very tough. Just picked up 4 new ones at noon. They must be unique to the H series.
