Well i finnaly relized i dont have enough cash to turn my h into a puller. So im just going with a basic restoration. What should i have on their for exhuast if im doing a basic restoration. Should i just put a muffler on or a nice shiney pipe? Also if i do put a muffler on how do i find out what the exact original one looks like?

The original OEM mufflers had a short pipe. Sometime, I believe in the late 40's IH started using the longer pipe. All new mufflers, correct specs as to materials and sound or not, will have the long pipe. The earliest ones may have been black.

If you are looking for a new muffler built to exact original specifications inside and out they are available but are VERY pricey. Glancing through a few catalogs that I picked up at the Red Power Roundup in Iowa this year I found 2 company"s that sell them for $79 + shipping. You can call Mark"s Tractors in Illinois at (217)694-4735. You can also call Pilot Knob Restorations in Illinois at (815)777-0826.

Was it really black? And why doesnt that look like the ones in the manual? Was it really black? I cant imagine the muffler being black. I actually believe i have the original laying around some were but it is very rusted.

You can put a crome stack on as long as you don"t mind the loud exaust noise . But if you want to do a simple basic restoration I"d put a muffler on these tractors look great original .
my exaust on my 42 H has a bolt flanged pipe that goes on the exaust manafold then the muffler slides on and clamps on to the pipe. all new exaust have a threaded pipe that screws into the manafold and then you clamp on the muffler.have"nt seen any real original hook ups anywhere so if you don"t have the real one good luck i used my original one. put a picture in photos so i can see what she looks like . happy hunting .JRB

What i am basicly saying is i noticed in the manual the pipe on top of the muffler is alot shorter than how they sell the mufflers. Is that how there are originaly? Or did it have the longer pipe on top of the muffler?

I see a lot of mufflers with a short pipe on the top side. In a lot of cases I know of it's because they wouldn't go through the shop or barn door without hitting on the muffler. So they got the old hack saw takin to them.
