My H with a combination gasoline-distillate carburetor idles rich regardless of where the idle mixture adjustment screw is. It makes no difference if the screw is all the way in or all the way out. The carburetor has been rebuilt by a mechanic and all the passages were blown out and clear. The float level is set at 1 27/32. Any ideas to curb this problem will be greatly appreciated

Check gasket ..... ...make sure it is tight. Two half"s of carb are flat. Could be bowl is letting in air{leak} in gasket.

If it idles rich AND if adjusting idle mixture screw has no effect, it means either there’s a blockage in the carb idle air passage (most likely) or there’s a crack/pinhole somewhere in the carburetor (not very likely).

Recommend disassembling the carburetor and carefully cleaning all the passages with a piece of wire – don’t simply just blow them with compressed air. Pay particular attention to the one or two holes in the throttle body casting that open into the air passage next in the throttle plate area – that’s where the blockage most likely is. Also give both carb castings a close inspection for hairline cracks/pin holes.

When reassembling make sure there’s no passages covered by bowl gasket (i.e. wrong gasket or gasket is installed upside down).

One other tip: Check the carb float and make sure it is not gas-logged. (Take the float out and shake it– if you hear anything sloshing around inside, throw it away and get a new one)

Good luck!

Does it idle too fast or blow black smoke at idle ?

I have had the same problem and have seen posts with the same problem pop up on a fairly regular basis. Let us know what solution you find. I've gotten my carb to a point where I can get _some_ adjustment with the idle mixture screw but, I'm still running a bit rich.

Super,

Just thinking out loud; is it idleing too fast and the idle screw makes no noticable difference?

You might try slowing it down with the low idle speed screw and then the idle screw should have an effect.

Guessing,

Allan

I agree with the too fast idle suggestion. If the engine is idling too fast before you adjust the idle screw it will not work right. The reason is that the idle screw on these old carbs adjusts the amount of air let in during idle, not the amount of gasoline. Therefore, screwing the idle screw in makes the engine idle richer and out leaner, so if the engine is running too fast it cannot let in enough air and it is probably running with the main carb jets. Either that or the mechanic wasn't very thorough with the cleaning.

OK I will give it a shot to. My H used to run really rich untill I got my valve job done. I have rebuilt carbs and never made a difference and bought rebuilt that run great.I have also rebuilt alot of carbs that ran great also. Do you have your intake tight well I guess that would be a lean condition if that was leaking. Well thats my 1 1/2 cents worth. P.S. I would borrow a carb and try it and see what happens . JON
