International 484 parking brake question

Hello, I have a 484 diesel with the hand brake. It did work when I first got the tractor, but stopped working about the time the brakes got air in them because the fluid level got too low due to a leak I had. I know how to bleed the main brakes, but I don't know how to get the parking brake working again. Also, why is it that every time somebody pushes on the brakes when the tractor isn't running, the brakes go out and need to be bleed again?.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Jonboy, may be your park brake band is out of adjustment or the cable is broken or the band is worn. You can change the band by removing the fuel tank with fenders. Remove the hydrolic cover and PTO clutch, to make room for placing the band without stretching. If you broke the linning, it will short the life of the band. For the tractor brake problem, may be the strainer on the transfer pump is clogged by the linning of the park band. That pump is under the park band, in the transmission. Hi, re parking brake, there are usually two problems with the parking brake.
1)Someone leaves parking brake on and drives the tractor around because the idiot light on the dash is burnt out. Since the parking brake is inside the trans/diff case, then all the brake lining bits get in the hydraulic oil and clog the filter and the screen on the input to the hydraulic pump or plug the MCV that supplies hydraulic oil to power brakes and steering.

The solution to this problem is replacing parking brake band and flushing out trans/diff and hydraulic system.

See post "Hydraulic screen mess" above on this page. This is on 574 that has basically same setup but different engine.

2)The next are problems are parking brake control cable requires adjustment or is broken.

Re Brakes getting air if operated without engine running. Possible causes are air leak in hydraulic hoses feeding brakes or lack of hydraulic oil for brakes. Newer models had a hydraulic oil reservoir under the battery box to hold an oil supply for the brakes.

Maybe Bernard Le Mecano will offer some advice as he has worked on hundreds of these UK made models.

Good luck

I'm thinking it could be the linkage jut needs adjusting, but it could be the lining is shot because it was driven with the parking brake on from time to time due to the idiot light not working. How much of a job is it to replace the parking brake band and where is it located?.

The only leaks I know of is a fitting at the power steering in the very front of the tractor leaks alittle, could that be where the air is getting in?. I talked with someone who has a 784, and he was experiencing the same thing with the brakes as mine.
Thanks!

Re Parking brake band replacement. I have never replaced one, looked in my IT shop manual but could only find replacing wheel brakes.
I was at IH dealer once when the mechanic was replacing parking brake band on 574. He had fuel tanks, seat and cover under neath the seat off.
Apparently you can pull the old band out and feed the new one in around the brake drum. I would attach the new one to the old one and as you remove the old one it would pull the new one back around the parking brake drum.

I will probably find out one day soon as my brother had a student hired for the summer and he drove his 684 with the parking brake on and now it does not hold anymore.

Good luck
