I just purchased a 766 Farmall tractor that runs like new. However it has steam coming out of the blowby tube. I have only operated the tractor for a couple of hours. There is no sign of water in the oil. Think maybe head gasket. what do you think?

2 Rear end whines under load, sounds like the gears are going bad. Is this normal?

3 Where do I get a rebuild kit for a 360?

Thanks for you help.

Randy One way you can tell if it is steam warm it up good and hold your hand in the blow by BE Careful if it is steam it will be hot as steam would be if it is just blow by it will not be to hot to hold your hand in it. The seals are the thing I don't like about wet sleves but the dry sleve engines will not take the power and heat as wet sleves. I under stand the new over the road trucks are up to 50 pounds of boost on the intake a dry sleve engine would over heat.

Are you sure you're seeing steam out the breather pipe? 300 and 400 series engines are well-known for having a white blow-by to them, especially while idling. This is pretty much normal, even though it is a lot more than most other engines. Wouldn't worry too much about gear noise. Straight-cut gears can be that way.

Randy I would say you have a bad seal on a wet sleve head gasket will not steam the crankcase.
Whine in rear end not normal. Case IH dealer should have parts.

Thanks Aces

Is there a water jacket near a oil dran passage? I definitely know the head gasket is leaking oil on the side of the block. Is it common for a sleve oring to start leaking?

Randy,

Sleeve O-rings tend to eventually deteriorate over time. How many hours are on the tractor? Water would have to get in the oil if this was the problem. Since the O-rings are on the bottom of the sleeves, if they leak, it goes directly into the oil pan. Keep checking the oil level.
