K.W.: Probably the single biggest improvment in the 666 over the 656 in the diesels was the fact with 666 you are rid of the glow plugs.

My opinion none of the IH 6 cylinder gassers were much. I lived in much colder climate than Iowa, and both my 560 and 656 were diesel. Put enough battery in there and add a circulating block heater, they are good for -40F. I don't plug my diesels in for starting, it's done to reduce engine wear, thus they will be plugged in any temp below 40F.

Grandpa bought a new 656 gas, but I don"t know when, to replace his 560. He was extremely disappointed in it. However, when he got a 666, he liked it much better. All three of these were gas tractors and not hydros. When I ask him why the 666 was much better, he couldn"t give me a definite answer, but just said it was. That"s about all I can tell you, but I know that grandpa would never buy another 656, but really likes the 666.

Red,

I know what your Grandpa is talking about.

When you crawl off of a 560 and up onto a 656, the darned things just feel strange and "funky" because of the way that seat is setting forward like it is.

But, you get used to it in time and grow to really like the little devils.

Was your Grandpa's 560 a diesel? I can see where he would be really disappointed if so.

Allan

No, all his tractors that size have been gas except a 686, which was also a very good tractor. Dad has always wanted to keep a gas tractor around because here in Iowa it can get cold sometimes. Yes, I know it gets even colder up north. I think my grandpa never thought the 656 was much of an improvement over the 560. He went from an M to a 560, so the 656 wouldn"t have been as large as jump as live hydraulics and pto, power steering, and a ta. Another thing he was disappointed in was the lack of down pressure on the fast hitch.

K W the big difference is the engine the 656 had the D283 and the 666 or 70 hydro had the D312.

Hi ya KW,

For all real intents and purposes, they are just about the same exact tractor with the 666 being the 'newer' version is all. The 666 added an extra battery, turn signals and 4-ways and that updated grille.

Somewhere along the line before the 686s, there were some heavier bearings added in the rear end, but it escapes me just when this happened. Someone more knowledgeable than I will surely shed some light on this point

Very nice little rigs, pick one and go! :>)
