Allen, My brother has a pallet of Power Steering units off old Farmalls, mostly M's 400's n 450's but I think there may be some off of a 300. I will look Monday and let you know. He is located in S.E.Mo.

Bought a Chr-Lynn for my M from them. Came complete with the shortened front steering shaft, guage mounting plate, and leftover power steering fluid.

Allan,
I have two scissor lifts that have orbital motors on the drive wheels, 4 motors in all. don't know what your looking for but these lifts had to travel and lift with 1500 lbs loads plus the weight of the machine it's self. the motors have a tapered shaft with key, other than that I can't tell you much. tomorrow I'll get some numbers if you think one might work for you. also don't know if they are Char Lynn but most likely are. also these lifts didn't any hours on em but they have been sitting fo 20 years.

Hi Red,

Naw, I didn't make myself clear (as usual).

I want one of those little Power Steering motors that can be adapted to an H's steering shaft. The things have the control actuator and the output all in one combined motor.

I'll probably just have to wait 'til Mike at steelwheelranch gets back from his road trip.

Thanks,

Allan

Sorry bout that,
If I had one it would be on mine. although my H steers slick as snot without one. I'm having trouble with this computer, I was trying to get in on the oil thang down below and I couldn't post, maybe somebodys trying to tell me something.

I am curious why one would need PS for single front wheel rig. All my rigs have "arm power" steering. I have yet to drive my H so I am just thinking out loud.

Shep,

I see where you are coming from; it is no wonder they wouldn't pass me on any further than the third grade..... I'm just tooooo dumb.

I'll see if I can explain it in a series of pictures a little better.

First, I yanked that silly trike off and put on this wide front end:

So that I could mount this loader:

Now, my problem is that when I load this darned bucket full of dirt, she gets a bit hard to steer. Or, I'm just gettin' old, I dunno :>)

Hey Allan,

Those Farmhand loaders really are nice. Yourīs looks like one we had on a 4010D, even the pump.

Hi KIP,

Could be it.....this one came off a JD Diesel.

She's straight as an arrow too; kinda hard to find 'em that way, whoever owned this one sure took good care of it.

Allan,

We used ours mostly with the Farmhand bale handler attachment. The Farmhand accumulator on the baler dropped 8 bales (usually around 90-100lbs ea) and the handler lifted all 8 with hooks. We never had any cracks or other problems with the loader (I think it was F-11 model)even after tens of thousands of bales loaded on trailers, then unloaded into barns. Thatīs a lot of weight out front, especially bouncing when tractor was in high reverse or 7-8 fwd gear. I still donīt know how the fwd hyd cylinders took it. Hope you have as good of luck with yours.

Hi Glenn,

I dunno. Guess it is what you are used to. We always have put the F-10s and F-11s on Hs and Ms.

Sure didn't use to notice the tough steering when I was younger, but I sure do now. :>)

I've still got to get the belly truses on this one too. Don't want to have her laying in the middle of the yard in two pieces.

Got the front end from www.steelwheelranch.com without the wheels, rims or tires.

Think it came to $813 shipped in here.

Thanks for the hollar,

Hey Allen, something just occurred to me do you have live power on that thing? If not how you gonna turn that thing with the clutch pushed in or lift the loader for that matter? Just curious, I just woke up so smack me. Duhh!

Now I fully understand :)

My loader is a dedicated TLB I bought to clear stumps with. I have yet to sell it. When I get ready to sell it I find some other reason to keep it. Poor old rig don't get used much so I need to find a home for it. I hate to just see it sitting more than working, but then who knows - maybe I can dig some ditches for a living :)

LOL!!!!

Yeah, I know. Thought I'd give it a shot though.

Mike over at steelwheelranch has the kit, only has one phone line into his place of business, it is always busy; at 3pm I finally connect and talk to someone who doesn't have a clue as to what I'm talking about.

Says Mike will be back sometime next week....groan.

I mean this old tractor has done without PS for 53 years now..... I gotta hurry up on this one!! :>)

Hey buddy, last night I went on the classified ads on here and advertised that I wanted a live pump for my M and got six responses by this morning. Might try that . I got one coming from Salmon, Idaho, guaranteed to work. If you don't do any good here you might try there. Later, Harley

Hi Dick,

I think you're right. This is gonna be expensive and there just is no way around it.

Those kits run in at $500 to $600 without the pump so, he is probably right in the ballpark on his complete kit.

You could try Force America at 1-888-449-0358.

They still sell the powersteering kits for the M's but they are spendy.

The Charlynn torque generator is still available for $450 or so. I think you can still get the shaft couplers and mounting shim for the motor at the steel wheel ranch dot com.

Looks like that loader you are running has a separate hydraulic system running off the pto? You could tap into that hydraulic circuit to run the charlynn unit... That guy from ND had a website detailing his H's powersteering setup.

Hi,

Well, there's two things wrong with that idea as I see it: When you take the loader off, we've got a problem with the power steering and a few danglin' hoses.

Secondly, the H doesn't have a live PTO, so I would loose power steering every time I hit the clutch.

Ol' Harley down in MO sold me a live pump to mount to the timing gears, so now all I need is that spendy stuff up under the hood. :>)

Yep, I was thinking cheap...but since you already have the live pump, you might as well us it.

My dad has a 39 H with a Du-All 250 loader- the loader mainframe and pto hydraulic system stay on year round, we just remove pins at the loader arms and unhook the lift cylinders...of course there is 4 quick couplers on the hydraulic lines to dissconnect too..

I am not so sure that a pump driven off the stock H distributor drive gears will hold up. This sounds like a pump setup off of a 300. For this to work and hold up, one needs to swap the front timing gears and front housing out with a 300. Otherwise, you will have teeth in your oil pan soon.

Hi Brian,

Do you really think so?

I was just going to grab 3gpm to run the power steering and dump the rest right back into the original tank, still using the original hydraulic pump for any remotes if ever needed.

I doubt if I'll ever use a remote with that old tractor again anyway.

Couldn't I just rig up a low-pressure proprietary valve to ease the load on the live pump? Couldn’t I set it up for both pumps to use the same oil in that old tank?

Need your help here,

Allan

Allan,

The flow rate is not the problem. It is the pressure your system will take to run the steering. Pressure = force to run the pump = disaster to the timing gears.

Brian
