SUPER A with a MOWER

I want to know if I can use a hydraulic lift rear type (NOT a belly or pull behind with 2 wheels) brush hog with my SUPER A. I"m concerned about the angle or clearance of the PTO shaft going from the tractor to the brush hog. The PTO on the SUPER A is off to the left, while the brush hog connection will is centered and several dealers have said they don"t think the shaft will clear the brush hog "A" lift frame, but they don"t seem very knowledgable... and before I spend $500 I"d like some straight answers. Does anybody have a SUPER A with a rear lift type brush hog and what has been your experience with the brush hog"A" frame clearance? Thanks for the straight answers!

I use a 5" kingcutter, 5' disk, and a 6' box blade behind a 140. Near identical to a Super A with no problems. The 140 has a work saver 3 point that could have been designed better but it does the job. Had the same concerns myself before buying it but I am not disappointed. Probably the heaviest thing I use is the box blade at about 560lbs. Lifts it as if it was nothing. Only problem I have is traction.

I have a Super A with Worksaver brand 3 pt hitch and I use a Bush Hog brand 4 ft mower. Thw PTO shaft clears the A frame OK and the whole set-up works just fine.
To lift the mower,I did put on a beefier version of the steel rod that connects the front rockshaft to the rear rockshaft. The standard rod may have been strong enough, but it just didn"t seem strong enough to me.

I have used PTO impliments behind my SA, but found if they are drawbar pull type, they are so close to the tractor, that the PTO shaft telescopes in & bottoms out on a hard left turn. The fix for this is to use one of those triangle shaped drawbar extensions. This hooks up the implement about 6" or so further back of the actual drawbar. I"ve seen these on a lot of old Farmalls, and I"ve seen drawings of it someplace, maybe the implement catalog.

Jon, that seems to scare a lot of new Super A owners. When I bought mine it had a 5' Corsicana on it. Everything clears and works just fine. it is setup with a u=joint on both ends of the drive shaft so the angle setup is no problem. enjoy it. ugly

So Im guessing you have a 3 point hitch, either kit or home grown? I'd like to put a home grown 3 pt hitch on my SA but have often wondered how much weight it would handle.

Kendall: I have a home grown 3 point for my 130. Tractor is equiped with single point fast hitch, and if I wish to use the 3 point I just drop the fast hitch pull bar and install the 3 point lower links. It will easily lift 600 lbs with one point. The 3 point is a bit less as I cant get implements as close to tractor.

Just one example on this I have a 60 IMP. gallon sprayer. My guess is full it weighs 800 lbs. Sprayer is 3 point, and I fabricated a one point adapter to get it closer to tractor. The one point hitch will lift the sprayer, full if I take about a 50 lb lift on back with my hands. I can not do that with the 3 point. I use a couple of check chains so sprayer weight is not on hydraulics when spraying. I also must use some front end weight.

I have fabricated a number of implements for my tractors, and have used the one point. Key to this is getting implement weight close to tractor. I have a 6', 3 bar S tine field type cultivator, probably only weighs 400 to 500 lbs., but cultivator extends almost 6' back from rear tires. Tractor lifts it fine, but place 2 bags of fertilizer at very back and tractor will not lift. I also have 7 foot rotary hoe, weighs twice as much as the cultivator, but the weight is all within 2 feet of tractor wheels, and tractor lifts this no problems.

On implements over 500 lbs, my advice is do everything you can to get weight close to tractor. Inches count on this one.

Hugh, sounds like I'll be ok with things like middle busters, subsoilers, 4 or 5 ft scraper blades, or cultivators. If I do the bush hog, maybe need to tie some helieum ballons to it. I just dont want to break the rockshaft arm at the hydraulic pump. Thanks for all the info.

Kendall: Those rock shafts are the weak point, no question. As I said I use chains with implements being carried at a constant height. The 100, 130 and 140 as you probably know have spring assists, to help the hydraulics. I have added a few to Super As with limited success. Just didn't have right spring for the job.
