I am looking to buy a good tillage tractor on a smaller farm. I see a 1466 and a 1566 on the dealer's lot, both have only fenders. All things being equal, which would you rather have? I know the 1566 is heavier duty and has more HP, but only has a 3 speed trans. Is having only 6 speeds a pain in the butt? Which would you buy? PTO is unimportant.

Timmy, hp/acre isn't quite how I would figure it. $/acre makes more sense to me. I am not sure what the dealer is asking for them, in Iowa it would take a great tractor to bring over much over 8500. And at auction I think I could find a nice one for 7500. So 7500 for a 14 or 15 beats all to heck the price of the green equivalent. Bear in mind a large part of that difference is going to a better cab, and a quad or powershift tranny. There is a case of two tractors (red vs green) with the same hp, but a big difference in price.

On which you should buy, I aggree with Allan. The 14. My bet is it is cheaper to work on than the 15. There were two 15s around were I am, Dad never thought much of either of them. They could have both been exceptions, but...

I'd go for the one in better shape if the prices of the two were close. If your handling smaller equipment I doubt the extra gear in the 14 would be needed..... ..... .....

Mornin' TP,

Yeah, if he's using smaller stuff, he probably doesn't want either one of those brutes. Those are some pretty snorty beasts to be pushing small implements!

I couldn't understand what Hugh McCay was saying about this thread; coming from this angle, this is probably what he was talking about. :>)

Allan: There is a guy up the road from me, restoring his dad's Farmall 300. It was bought new in 1955 to acompany a smaller MH in cash croping 500 acres. The boys told their dad he should have bought a 400. Dad told the boys he bought the 300 to make money. And believe me, money he did make.

He tells me 400 was $2,200. more money than 300, and 400 diesel would have been another $1,500. on top of that. IH must have narrowed the gap after that, as I looked at a new 766 in 1975, and bought a new 1066 for $2,000. more. The 966 would have been $1,200. more than the 766.

Timmy: You did say smaller farm, and smaller farm can be a lot of difference to some people. My opinion, unless you are doing 600 to 800 acres either one of those tractors will be little more than a bill of expence. Unless you can farm with 1/4 hp or less per acre your not in the ball game these days. I am refering to total hp of all tractors on farm.

Wade! Cut the boy some slack. He said on a small tilliage farm, not half the state. Be nice to have both those monsters to pick from when you went out in the morning wouldn't it? Harley

I would take the 14 as well. I hear a lot of people miss the extra speed when using a 1566. I know you said that the PTO wasn't an issue but with the 14 you at least have the option of having 540 if you need it.

Hi Tim,

The 14, in a heartbeat.
