Buying a 1086 Turbo, any quirks I should know ???

I bought a 1086 Turbo today 4,500 hours, '78 or '79. T/A replaced with newer micro-switch style 200 hours ago. Cat. 3 hitch, dual p.t.o., dual remotes, clamp on duals. Cab w/air. Digital dash. Will be delivered by Saturday. Also a IH 13 foot/13 shank chisel plow.

Any quirks or advice on operations, or maintainance for that series tractor...

Forgot to ask about over-haul history, will call tomarrow and ask. It started immediatly on dead cold start. No smoke, good oil p.s.i..

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Milan

I had to read that post about 5 times before I figured out what had the "micro switches"!

I finally realized you meant "mechanical diodes" in the TA.

Nope! He"s saying that the TA shifting has been updated to the electric style. The 3088 series had it for sure, not sure if it was avalible from the factory on the late 86"s, but it certainly can be installed. Uses a microswitch on the control lever to activate a soliniod which moves the shift valve. Eliminates the mechanical linkage and the problems caused by those who do not adjust it once in a while. Mechanical Diode TA"s are somthing totally different.

Thanks for clarifying that for me. Thought I might have mixed up what the dealer had said. Your deffinition is exactly what the manager had said. Solinoid engagement. Thanks

Sorry about the confusion. Never had a tractor with a T/A before. This is a step up from the letter series tractors and 574 RC I have. The local guys I've talked with say to unbolt the T/A lever and throw it out. Cost too much to re-build.

Milan,

Tell your local guys that ol' Allan says they are full of prunes. :>)

Why would anyone ever want a 1086 that has been castrated?

Allan

We had a 1086, Dad sold it, was a very good tractor. The only problem we had with this tractor is the shifting. The shifter in the cab would get it self in 2 gears at the saem time. Their is a kit on the market to fix that, but that is the only problems I have ever heard of in the 86 series tractor. We used it to pull a 13ft chisel plow and an 18ft IH field culivator, never lacked for power.

Hello, Thanks, I've seen the ads for the shifting problems in the Farmer's Advance. I didn't know what the problem was though. Did you install the kit, or just live with it... And what would you do to get it out of the two gears at same time ??? Just shift to neutral ???

We did nothing with it, it would only happen if you tried to shift with out letting the tractor fully stop, or try to shift too quick. As KB said, the dealer needs to check all the linkages and adjustments before you take delivery. When it did go inot two gears,we shut off tractor and pried to shift gate back in neutral.

I've heard of those kits too, but I do not know what they consist of. Really, if you get yourself a manual and keep the shift linkage, clutch, transmission brake, and dump valve adjusted, they aren't that bad, but still worse than the 26/56/66 series. Getting caught in two gears is a sign of serious wear and misadjustment. It does happen quite a bit on the 86's, so if you notice that the tractor is hard to get in or out of the Range gears- Hi, Lo, and R, get it looked at right away. It happens when shifting from Hi or Lo to reverse. There is so much slop in the linkage that the lever can be moved back to N before disengaging the gear you were in. You move over to R, try to move, notice that the tractor seems bound up, try to shift back to N, but can't, because the Hi/Lo linkage is out of line. If you think this has happened, shut off the engine, as trying to move in two gears will do major damage. To get it unstuck, you need to pry the Hi/Lo linkage under the cab back to N, then do the same for the R linkage. Really got to be familiar with them to be able to identify the linkages under there, which is why it's a very good idea to get suspected problems looked at before it gets that bad. Call the dealer and tell them you want the clutch, dump valve, and transmission brake adjusted before they bring it out, and also have them check over the shift linkage.

Thanks, I did request that the cluch and clutch brake be adjusted. I moved both levers through all the ranges and no binding what soever. I also reqested that all the fluids and filters be changed. And that all the gauges and idiot lights work. Those were my conditions for the sale to take place.

The kit was never installed at the plant. The reason for the kit was to get rid of the TA cable. With time the cab mounts would get soft and as the cab moved up and down it would also move the spool on the MCV up and down causing the TA to shift in and out of TA when you were just going down the road. I have installed quite a few of these kits and they are not bad.
