I was wondering how you would check a Super C starter? The tractor started fine since I got it in the fall now winter is here it doesn't seem to have any zip to it. Charge the battery up and doesn't make much difference but battery only tests at about 3.5 volts after tryin. I don't want to have to buy a battery and a starter if I don't have to. Now if I have to buy a battery should I just go to 12 volt? I have an alternator off a 84 buick I can use if I have to and the diagram doesn't look like it would be too hard to switch to 12 volt as far a wiring. Also which manual would be best to buy that would show all about the engine, starter, govener? Also my dads Super A seems to gallop untill near open full. Would this be in the govener settings, seems to run a bit better when tighten the spring up some. Where would he have to change the govener settings? Are they in that case at front of the tractor. Sorry for the long post just seems the cold is bringing out the worst in the good tractors. Terry

I reckon if your battery only tests 3.5 volts you've probably already found your problem. Make sure you've got 1 gauge or larger battery cables on it and tune it up properly. The way I see it is unless you live somewhere incredibly cold 12 volt is only covering up the real problem.

As to that Super A - You'll probably find that after 50 years the springs in the governor have had it. There are three of them in there and they are available from CaseIH. They are hiding under the unit right at the front in front of the distributor. Just be careful when you take it out (which can be done without removing the rad or fan guard - just) because it is part of the gear drive to the distributor and if you turn the engine over (or the distributor) while it's off you can mess up the timing. Hope this helps, SAm in NS

Check the surge spring in the governor. Also, a carburetor with dirty jets or passages can cause or add to the galloping.

Hi Terry, I agree with George on the battery. You need to fully charge that battery and check
the specific gravity of the electrolyte in each battery cell. These readings should be fairly close to each other. If the cells are close and read 1250-1275 and one cell reads 1100-1150 you have dead cell. You also need a heavy battery cable to the starter and to the ground.
You draw a lot more current when it's cold. Use a multi-duty oil too. Do a tuneup if one hasn't been done lately, makes a big difference in the winter. I'll let someone else comment on the governor. Don't set and grind on the starter it should start within a few revs. Install a coolant heater to preheat your engine, this saves the battery when the temp is very cold. Hal

You didn't say how long you "tried" but sure sounds like a bad battery to me. Cold weather will bring them out of the woodwork..... ...
