300 won't run

I have a 300 row crop. I can't get it to run. It's been converted to 12V. It has a ballast resister and the 6 volt ignition. When I try to start it, it fires right off, but won't keep running after I turn the key off from the "start" position. I thought that it may be something with the ignition wiring, so I ran a jumper from the battery to the resister. No difference! It's getting gas, I'm sure of that 'cause if I choke it for a while, it starts to drip. I had the carbureator rebuilt, and it ran fine after that. There was a problem with the alternator, but I got it running after fixing that and it started right up and the ammeter showed a good charge. Any Ideas?

That sounds to like me that ballast resistor is
shot. My neighbor had a speed boat and it did the same thing, it would start and when you released the starter switch it would quit. New ballast resistor fixed the problem. Hal
Have a Happy New Year.

Texp, have you checked to see if you have voltage to the resistor and coil with the key in the run position? The other guys are right...but you may be loosing voltage in the run position. This might be wiring, or a bad switch.
Just turn the key to the run position and check for voltage. If you have it, then try what the other guys said. If not, you have to figure out why it is not there.
Hope this helps...

Sounds like a resistor to me also why not just hotwire it and see if it keeps running ( jump resistor with a small piece of wire)

That is typical of a bad balast resistor. once you release the key the power fails to go through. The spring may look good but the resistor can be bad. by pass it with a jumper wire and I bet she will work. JON

the resistor may be bad, connect a test light to the out side of the resistor and start her up see if the light goes out when it dies

I would replace the coil, with a 12V one.I have seen old coils heat up when they get old and they fail until they cool down again.
