I don't know why anyone would want to listen to two JD's running side by side. Seriously, I am deaf in one ear and can't hear out of the other. You don't notice that until it is too late to do anything about it (none of my business so I'll shut up)

A four cyl split manifold will only be loud. It is not the same mellow sound found on six and eight cyl engines.

I just had a manifold split, but it was on a 6 cyl tractor. I am sure the sound is quite different than what your 4 cyl will sound like.

You should take the manifold to an experienced welder and have him test weld to see how well the manifold will accept the weld. I was told that nickle rod is the best.

I cut the hole using a circular hole blade. The hole was about 1/16 larger than the black pipe I used for the outlet. The extra 1/16 allowed the welder to penetrate better along the edge. The saw blade became dull before I got through the manifold, so I poured valve grinding compound into the saw groove, continued cutting very slowly so compound wouldn't be thrown from the groove. I had the hole cut in about 20 minutes.
