I know all of you guys like/love/live for Farmalls but if you could trade a farmall for a different make of tractor, what would it be? I personally would want a JD 2-cylinder, perferrably a R, G, 80, 820, 830, 70, 720, 730, or a 40 on tracks. What would ya"ll want?

Having the opportunities to operating other people's (other brand) tractors, if I had to, probably would be a 4020 Diesel. I currently own a 1937 A John Deere (my father-in-law purchased this new), a 1952 77 Oliver with a loader, a 1961 460 Farmall, and a 1962 560 Farmall (my uncle purchased new). I have owned bigger Farmalls and Olivers when I was actively farming. Now I just "hobby farm".

If I could get a JD spoke flywheel D I would probably trade 1 of my Farmalls for it. That is if I went Green. A G-1000 Minnie would be COOL to But it won't fit in the garage! Shaggy

If I had to trade for something, assuming that it was a even trade with no money exchange even if the tractors were of different values. I would have to go with a Sheppard SD3 or SD4 or a Gibson I or a Gibson H. I am a sucker for the lesser produced tractors though.

If I did not have to use it, I would want a steam engine. If I had to use it, the neighbor has an 88 Oliver that looks pretty good. The 2 cyl. JDs are just too awkward unless you are running the belt.

I wouldn't trade any Farmall for one, but I'd like the unstyled JD AR's and BR's. Have to be on spokes. Or an unstyled D with round spokes. Have to be a steal or I wouldn't do it. Only other JD I would want would be my Grandpa's dad's styled A he bought new, just keep it in the family.
Just don't let Grandpa know about this green stuff!! I'll never hear the end of it!!
The tractor I really want is a '51 MD. Narrow front, front and rear weights, Donaldson Air-Cleaner, and shiny RED paint applied by me.

Well the only farmall I have left is a B and its only a parts tractor. I sold all the others because they just could do the work I get out of my Olivers. Had a 450 but it would begian to keep up to my Oliver super 88 so I sold it. But if I get the chance I'll buy another

If I had an IH that I was forced to trade for another color tractor I would pick a JD 2010 Diesel. I ran one under a loader and thought it was a pretty nifty rig, with the syncro-range transmission, foot throttle, and quick turning radius. It ran pretty cheap too. According to the serial numbers there were only a few more than 48,000 of them made, so they should be a collector item some day which would be a bonus! Actually, it was the closest any tractor has ever come to converting me away from red.

Captn',

Well now, that's an idea!

My dad had one of those little 'misquito' tractors and it didn't last long enough to get the paint burnt off the manifold. Wasn't worth a plug nickel for doing anything except very light pulling tasks.

But, now that you mention it, I'll bet that little rascal would have made a good loader tractor. Did you have a wide front end under yours?

The tractor belonged to a neighbor that used it to load small square bales. Yup, it had a wide front end and a Farmhand F-11 loader on it.

Why are there more JD's in collections than Farmalls?

FM,

I didn't even know I was so devoted to my darned tractors till I read your post because I really, really like those old '55 JD 60s & 70s with the wide fronts.

But, I don't think I could trade any of my present tractors for anything. It took too much life and livin' to get 'em.

I sold a tractor once, a Farmall Cub.

Don't ever want to go through that painful withdrawl again.

Oh yeah, I also had two Fordson Major diesels, but that was not like selling tractors.

Andy,

Same way here; we had a lot of Fords on and off the place from time to time, but they could just never seem to get into the tractor "big leagues" and always just seemed kinda like toys.

Me too. The wife, the kids, tractors and machinery. Pure, uncut emotional trama when they all came up missing.

I've never had a sale, even one I wanted but have watched the neighbors go through forced sales. Lots don't live through it.

But I did have a fire, burned up my shop including eight Farmalls Cub A B C H SH M SM. One Cub left sitting in the pasture. Also lost CAT D-2, 1937 Plymouth coupe, '54 Chevy, complete cabinet shop (20x60) with lots of red oak and power tools, 5 cent Coca-Cola pop machine, and my mower and baler, lots of antiques safely stored away.

It took ten years to realize it wasn't my fault.

Life happens.

My new saying is "All's well that ends"

You're right, it doesn't help to talk about it.

I don't kow that I would want to trade, but I would like to have one of those red-nosed minnies, also an oliver 77 or similar, and someday a massey 33 or 44. Oh shoot, I'll admit it, I kinda like those John Deere Ds too, but please don't let anyone here know about that. Oh well, I guess maybe I really am in over my head, I'll admit that I went to an auction recently with the hopes of bringing home a Ford 6000. Is there any hope for me now? Anyone know a cheap head doctor? Are there any drugs I can take?

I have what I believe to be a 39 B JD. I was of the understanding that the 39 was the first styled B. Underneath is is an unstyled. I also thought the underlying tractor changed in 40.
It's in the corner of a shed, about where I put it when I bought it 20+ years ago.

Original.

The H is more original (rough) than the others.

When I have time, I work on IH.

I have a Super MTAD and an O-6 calling my name but I'm too busy trying to fix hay equipment to work on tractors.

Since I have a bunch of IH tractors I try to keep some collectible green ones around just so people won't think I don't know any better.

The A was my first tractor ($100), the old B was the neighbor's, I paid $300 for the new B two years ago (bad carb), and the H sat next door to my wife's homestead since she was a child and I paid $300 for it to the heirs. Came with equipment I can't seem to find time to go get but the rims came off the wheels when we moved it.
