I am getting ready to restore a 1939 M, the problem is the rearend housing has a crack in it where the bearing went out and dropped the bull gear. i have a 49 M, is the rearend the same as the 39's? the only thing i can see different is the cover, the 39 has the groove where the seat sit's in, is this the only difference? thanks

A '49 housing should fit.

there might be some value in keeping the '39 casting numbers together. A '39 is a little special and may increase in value.

I've seen old tractors running well with a patch bolted over a hole in the housing with a rubber gasket.

The crack can be repaired. All of my '39 Hs had cracked rear end housings in the same area as yours. A good welder can chase the cracks, heat the housing up, and braze it back together. Make sure the welder knows what he is doing, as the housing will have to cool down slowly.
