I've heard it both ways,regarding the usage of an inline fuel filter on a gravity feed fuel system....some say it impedes flow and shouldnt be used,others say it doesnt restrict free flow at all.What is the general opinion? I dont believe the sediment bowl is sufficient to keep the carb clean,and the mesh inlet fitting could be too easily plugged.

I've never had trouble with just the sediment bowl. Without taking mine apart, I would say that the screen in the sediment bowl is finer than the screen in the carb inlet.

I put a cheap see-thru inline filter on my 350U, and all my fuel and carburation problems went away. I've put them on every tractor I own with nothing but good results

Paul: For the most part I have used IH original equipment on fuel filtration. The exception being My Super A, when I bought the tractor it had a lot loose rust in tank. For about 3 months I used screen in bowl, plus an inline filter about 3 time the size a SA would need. Once I was satisfied rust was cleaned up I removed the inline filter.

Other than that it has been factory equipment, and I used to burn about 500 gallons of gas in each of SA and 130. My 300 probably went 25,000 hours with nothing but original equipment. I will say this however, I think one has far less trouble when tractors are being worked every day. I do notice since my SA and 130 are no longer being used commercially and often parked 3 to 4 weeks at a time, carburation and corosoion of electrical, need more attention than when tractors were worked.

I had a fram G-2 inline filter on a farmall A, the motor would use fuel faster than it could flow through the filter. I have replaced it with a no-name filter with a fine plastic mesh screen, and have not had any flow problems since.

There are two types of fuel filters, one for gravity feed systems, and one for pressurized systems. Filters for pressurized systems restrict the fuel flow, filters for gravity systems do not.

This is just my thought... We have an inline filter on our super M pulling tractor and everything seems to work great. Most of the farmalls that pull around here, stock or fixed up, run the inline filters vs. the sediment bowl. I don't see a problem with it.
