Got my new 450D in the shop last night. It barks out the exhaust so I thought I'd pull the head before trying to use it.

My question is, how much difference is the engine from an MD?

I'm assuming they are about identical, but since I've never had anything as new as the 450D I'm looking for advice and pointers.

I figured I'd get a valve lob, check the liners, and at least change the rings and rod bearings as it has low compression.

I have to agree with Bill46. If it "barks" a little bit and smokes, your problem could easily be partially fouled injectors. This is especially true if the tractor was subject to long periods of idling and low load. I think you should find a way to work the tractor for at least a few hours and then see how the engine runs. You've got nothing to lose except time and money. Some diesel fuel injector cleaner may also help clear the problem faster.

Good Luck,

Steve

Before you go to pulling it down, check the oil and water, take it out and pull the heck out of it.
I have one my dad had before he died. All he ever did with it was rake hay with it. An old timer told me to before I pulled it down load the heck out of it...make an honest tractor out of it. He said you gotta work these old tractors to clean them out. 10 minutes of pulling an 8 ft disk and the exhaust cleared up and she runs fine.
Never had to lay a wrench on the engine.
My 2 cents.

Heck and 8 foot disc is no load for a 450 we use to pull a 13 foot and plowed with 4x14 with a 5 bottom harrow on the plow but i think that he has a problem andit needs looked into , if he finds nothing then all he is out is a head gskt. and valve cover gskt. It could be that all it needs like mine did was new bushing and seals in the injection pump and if that is the case then and injection shop can help him out there . I don't even do my injection work since i don't have a stand and don't have the big bucks to by one even though i would like to .

Yes Tractor Vet...perhaps you are right, after all it is a few years old.
My little mechanical pump is starting to leak a little, but down here I have not found one yet. I hate to go buy a new one from CIH, they may not even have one. I think all needs is seals.

Since ya got it off have it checked for cracks . If ya got problems get ahold of me as i have had a 450 D and found one problem that some people have never come across before and have trouble fixen . What some think is a valve problem can be a cracked bore about half way down between 3 and 4 or it could be the bushing in the injection pump causing a miss at no load but the tractor runs fine under load . When i got mine and like all tractors that i have had for myself they where all basicaly junk and had problems that could not be found and sold as junk , i love a challange . Mine would misfire throw smoke ring back fire do all kinds of weird stuff and everyone told me that it had a cracked head after teare down and checking everything rebuilding the head and putting it back together it did the same thing , my buddy had a 450D so we started swappen parths off of his till we found the problem and this is after we had the so called best I H mechanic helpen it turned out to be the injection pump and all the work that i did was for nothing but i did learn a bunch and back then it only cost me 112.78 to fix the problem.

Thanks. I only can afford to buy junk.

Paid $800 for this 450 with one bad rim but running. No battery so they were pulling it to start.

It starts fine but starts to barking as it warms up. Last night (I've had it 6 mo but just now got it in the shop) it was just intermittant but never stopped billowing gray smoke even though it warmed up. I am assuming it is low compression and maybe a bad valve or loose guide.

I hate to take something apart that is running but this one warrants it. I've got a one way and round baler I want to use it on this spring and summer.

Maybe Allen in NE is rubbing off on me!

Well like i said if ya got that problem then look real hard down in the bore for a crack and have the head maged. , i don't figure it is a valve that would be to easy and if it is cracked between the cyl. then don't run out and get a block just bore it out and have a heavy wall repair sleeve pressed in and rebore to install a stock sleeve all fixed ,now the only problem that i have found with these old engines is that the bearings are hard to come by and are real pricie and the other thing is the thrust on the crank ya can fix them and they don't make and over size thrust bearing and tryen to find a good crak well i looked for two years and never did find one worth bring home. I loved the 450 that i had and thought that i would like to have it back but they are to the point that they are nice to look at and play with but to expencive to fix SOOOOooooo for a working tractor i have gone to 706 gassers or 806 diesels but now that gas has hit 2.09 yesterday i may have to rethink and start buying David browns god i hate them .

Reminds me of the old saying:

"A little polish, a little paint, makes a girl what she ain't".

Women and tractors all look better with a little work!
