My 5288 will not stay in 3 or 4 speed gear in any range. speeds 1,2,5,& 6 all work fine in all three ranges and reverse. Can anyone give me a heads up on what needs to be done. My local dealer does not have anyone who has ever worked on this transmission and say they will just have to go in and look. Well I would like to have a better start than that. Any idea"s?

I am not familar with that model. Did they have linkage wear problems like some of the other IH's? If not, then some of the gears in the transmission are likely nubbed off from use. My guess would be that those are the two most used gears. If it is a syncronized transmission, you may have to buy the gears in a "pack". You will not like the price that your dealer will quote you for those gears. If you do an extensive boneyard hunt you maybe lucky and come up with a good used pack.

i think i would find a different dealer. i can understand if they have been great in the past but to not have a tech that has never been into one what else have they never been into? just my opinion.

Well i can understand that with the turnover in mechanics it is posable that they don't . As for me i have never been in one because there are not that many around here in my area , when they came out farming was on the down side around here and most farmers were just trying to get by with what they had and the ones that had some money and did buy them never brought them to me as they were to new and they went to the dealer . Now if i had a book on one it sure would not take me long to figure it out but i always liked to buy one myself and experiment on my owen before i did one for money.

i guess i didn't mean to put anybody down, sorry. i've just been lucky to have a local dealer that most of the techs and parts guys have been with the dealer since it was still international so there is a wealth of knowledge.
