Have a couple of tractors to paint. Want to use a hardener. Wondering if any of you guys have found a place to buy a decent opositive air respirator that doesnt cost an arm and a leg. I only need it for paint once in a great while. Thanks

Dad made one using -- dont laugh, a small new sears shop vac, a new plastic gasoline can, clear tubing, and his normal respirator. Vacuum exhausts into tubing to gas can which he unscrews the lid slightly for pressure relief, plastic line to a fitting on his respirator. Respirator always has positive pressure. Works for his occasional use and less than $100 complete.

I studied up on this two years ago when restoring my SC. I really wanted to use hardener, and was like you wanting to either buy or jerry-rig a "cheap" supplied air system. The more I read about Iso's, including info from CNKS, the more they scared the poop out of me, and I decided against the hardener. I Painted with IH 2150 with recommended reducer, no hardener, using a cartridge-type 3M filter ($25-$30). Two years later, the paint job looks almost as good as the day I painted it...I didn't get sick and I can breath. When I paint my Cub this spring, I won't even think about using hardener. And I will use the cartridge filter mask again, especially seeing how red the cartridges were after I painted the SC. The flimsy particle masks just won't seal against your face well enough to do the trick.

Hardener requires a supplied air system, $400-$500 at the cheapest. A charcoal mask expensive or cheap will not absorb the isocyanates in the hardener. Iso's can make you sick, even if used only once (made me mildly ill after the second tractor I painted) and can kill you after repeated use. The effects are cumulative. Hobby Air is about the cheapest you can find. I have one, it works fine. See the link for one source.

Dang-it, I know this subject has been talked about several times here in YT and I thought I had it right. This makes me wonder now.

ALL hardeners require supplied air? I have used a harnener from NAPA and could not find any info in the data on the container that stated it contained iso's, or that supplied air was required.

I am going to the shop tomorrow and take another look at the container. I painted several coats on an 8N with this hardener in the paint. I used a fullface level C filter mask, with no ill effects.

Hummmmm

Skycarp, I wrote a more detailed response and lost it, it may still appear. Chances are very good that the hardener you used contains isos. They do not always affect you the first time, but probably will if you continue to use them. The hardeners in epoxy primers usually do not contain iso's, every other hardener very likely does -- the can may not say.

A fresh air system is not cheap.Seems the smaller the system the more they cost.I have seen a rechargeable model that fits around your waist and is plumbed into a full face mask....however it cost more than the lowest priced one man system...and to make matters worse there are replacement parts (filters and such) that arent cheap either. There really is no low cost solution to "fresh air" breathing.

If I misread your post, I apologize, but a "waist mounted" system still has to have the air intake outside the painting area -- any filters in it will not work for Iso's. It HAS to be a fresh air system. Unless you have an air tank on your back.

Yes,it was sourced from outside....the motor was to circulate the air and to keep the mask from fogging.

John,

Don't know of a cheap mask, but don't know if you want a cheap mask just 'cause of the fumes. I use a 3M at work. Wasn't cheap, but sure keeps the bad guys out of the snout!!! Sometimes health is wealth.
