I have a 300U that has a lot of play in the steering. The steering wheel loosely spins a good half a turn before turning the wheels. I am looking to get this slack out of it. Any suggestions on a cure? How diffucult is it to switch to power steering?

In trying to figure out this steering, one technique was to see how much was in the worm gear to the left steering arm. I know this probably a really stupid question but what is involved in tearing into where the left steering arm and worm gear meet?

I feel your pain. My steering pain got so bad on my 240U that I finally took it to a tractor place for a look and possible work. (This, after nearly putting the front bucket through the side of the garage when the steering refused to respond in less than about 9 spins of the "Wheel of Fortune".)

Don't have an estimate yet but I am already feeling kind of queer and puckery in the vicinity of my wallet. May have to pull my daughter out of college, but-- hey -- a man's gotta have his priorities straight to make it through this life intact.

Gotta lotta snow up here in New Hampshire right now! I'll let yall know how things progress...IF I go ahead with it.

After eliminating play from spindle-to-steering arm, tie rod ends, do this:(1) While turning wheel back and forth, watch the left steering arm at str. box. This will tell you how much play is in the worm gear to left str. arm (worm only connects to left arm,not both). If it's bad, you can remove the left arm and have the pin that runs in the worm welded up and reground to take up the slack. (2) If the above appears OK, then remove the right drag link at str. box arm. Then working arm back and forth will indicate how much play is in the left arm to right arm gear mesh. If this is bad it can be adjusted if someone has not adjusted it all the way already. Adjustment is accomplished by loosening the bolts that hold the two halves of box together and turning the two eccentric bolts w/ locknuts on each side(outer edge) of box. This merely slides two halves of box in order to mesh the str. arms together tighter. (3) Also, if the bearing on bottom end of steering worm is worn out it will cause play in steering. If this is the case, you will notice steering wheel moving up and down while turning it back and forth. All of these adjustments may or may not eliminate the play in your box. * The adjustments are better explained in an I/T or IH Blue Ribbon manual.

Play develops in the 4 tie rod ends, the steering arms to spindle spline connections, and the internal mesh of gears.
The steering shaft is a worm gear that intermeshes with the other 2 gears that are attached to the pitman arms, they have a built up area where they engage the worm gear.Play and wear builds in all these areas.Add all that up plus wear in bearings/bushings and its a miracle they steer at all.Mine has about 1/2 a rotation play and Ive done all I can to tighten it up.The box screws have been almost bottomed out over these past 50 years so there is no more adjustment available.New gears/shafts are no longer available, and a used P/S unit wont be cheap and may leak...besides,you need to plumb in the new unit and add valving to make the PS unit have priority over the hydra touch valving/implements.
Overall,Ute owners either have to live with the sloppiness,or spent a bundle to do something about it.

I wonder if the operator sat higher there would be greater leverage on the pedals? I am rather tall and have been toying with the idea of raising the (deluxe) seat a little higher.I notice that legroom isnt the greatest and I cramp after a short while (folded up too tightly).

On the side of the steering box there is a screw and jamb nut. Maybe both sides? Try loosening the nut and turning the screw. Could be your ball joints are bad. Could be the gears in the box are worn. Common problem with U. I thinkk power steering means awhole new box. There were lots of prvious posts about this. Try a search.
