I have a 1955 IH utility 300 and have a condensor problem - it eats them - so I was wondering if the polarity is wrong. It was converted to 12 volt with
Neg ground - would reversing the coil polarity help this problem Thanks Gary

I vote for Bob M's answer. The problem could also be a bad coil.

Besides keeping points from burning the condeser does aid in voltage buiding in the coil secondary windings as Bob M stated and the only thing I could possibly think of is a coil mismatch to your system.Condensors are fairly trouble free. Some coils will require larger microfarad rating condensers than others. Is it the stock coil?

What are the points doing.Condensors normally provide thousands of miles or many hours of service.Faulty ones burn the points. Are you testing them. All electrical troubleshooting requires a fully charged battery. To be honest this one is unusual.Bad points dont ruin them either. What ele is it doing and why are you concluding bad condesers?

Hi Gary,

What do you mean, "It eats 'em"? Is it shorting them out?

Can't ever remember having a "bad" condenser. Some that weren't the right size and throw, etc., but don't remember a shorted one on an old points type system.

Don't quite understand the whole of your problem, I guess.

Allan

Is there a ballast resistor installed in that ignition circuit? They're used to drop the voltage. I do not think the negative ground would cause the condenser failure. Hal

Ignition condensors are polarity insensitive - they'll work and last fine on either polarity.

Has a ballast coil been added to the primary supply to the coil, or has the original coil been swapped for a "12 volt" coil? If not, this could possibly account for your the condensor failures.

Hi Bob, I borrowed some of your words from a previous post on polarizing, hope you didnt mind, I usually say in the post that was you talking but forgot in that last post. Happy St Pats Day!
