Hi Guys,

Sloroll got his 966 moved to his place, has worked on it all day long and sent me some pictures.

I asked him for permission to post 'em up here 'cause this ol' sweetie is just about too good to be true!

I'll admit it, this feller makes me just a wee bit jealous with this old tractor. :>(

Allan: I have a question for you and indeed everyone else involved in this thread along with a few others. What do you find so exciting about 66 series tractors? My opinion is they were ugly, and statistically not near as good of tractor as the 56 series were. I bought one new 66 series tractor and can assure you it will be the last. If I had a use, I would buy another 56 series tractor. When I farmed I had at least one new tractor from each series starting with letter series right through to 66 series.

I can take you to countless farms that through the years were IH customers and indeed still are CaseIH customers. Just to give you an example, I have a neighbor with three newer CaseIH. He still has his 856 and three letter series tractors. His two 66 series were traded off quite quickly. Another guy not far away has his 856 and Super M, but his 66 series tractors he bought new have been replaced by new Deeres. I see this all over this area, the older IH tractors are still on the farms that bought them new. I was rather curious where all the 66 series tractors went to, so started asking. Dealer told me many were trucked back to US, they love them down there. Then one day I was at a huge scrap yard just north of here. That answered a lot of my questions. Most prominant grill sticking out of pile was 66 series. Didn't see any 56 and only a couple of 06.

All this has me rather curious, why 66 is still so popular south of the border.

Hugh, here in NW Missouri I never see 66 series tractors. I never really liked them, especially with a cab. I always thought a 56 series was a much more attractive tractor.
Around here, no one can even say something good about a 66 series tractor. I never heard anything good about one until I got on YT.

Hugh, I don"t know if the 66 series is any better than the 56 series, probably not, but I find them easier to operate, and certainly easier to get in and out of the cabs. We, (I use the term loosly) have 2 966"s and a 1456, and power notwithstanding, I prefer the 966 because of the control placements and the way it handles. We also have a 786 open station, and nobody wants to get within miles of that tractor. The only thing it ever gets used for is knifing nitrogen on corn. Its the clumbsiest IH I ever operated.

Mornin' Paul,

While I was tractor shopping, I ran across quite a few 986s.

They are probably a 'killer' of a tractor, but like you say, and also probably due to habit, they just seem to be built backwards in their control placement.

Another thing that was always botherin' me was the darned digital readout of the things. Just looks like a problem waiting to happen to me.

Dunno,

Allan

Hi Hugh,

I have no idea why other folks prefer one model over another other than just my own limited experience dictates.

For me, it was the changes in higher pump injection pressures and the higher compression at 22:1, which made them more fuel-efficient and this in turn, put an end to that belching black smoke and also made for a far easier starting tractor.

The accompanying downside was that with the advent of the 66s, a feller either learned real quick to wear ear protectors or lost his hearing, as they are quite a bit louder, horsepower for horsepower, than the 06s and the 56s.

Other than the engine change, they are pretty much the same identical tractors as the previous models save the cosmetic overhaul, which just gave them a newer, more modern "bulldog-tough" appearance.

Heck, I even get wound up when I see a clean old John Deere 37A come straight off the farm. It is where they've been and what they've done that gets my blood moving.

Like talking to a World War II vet; to this day, I'm still in total awe of their moxie.

Allan

Sloroll,

I think it is a very nice tractor. Hugh is just jealous because he doesn't have one.
One day he's bragging up his 1066, The next day he's trashing them. Just the nature of the beast I guess. I don't see a water filter on your tractor in the picture. I would put one on if I was you and flush the cooling system.

This "ugly" tractor of mine will be used mostly on turf so I need em on the soft side. Thanks though.

Hey Allan. cool pictures no doubt. If my cab would have been that good I might have left it but not even close so now we have a open station ready to hit the field or the track. Hey I just got home a while ago and got your parts and quadrant cover from the salvage yard. Tried to call you on the land line but couldn't even get the Mrs. to greet me. Anyway we'll talk soon. We are going to Seattle airport in an hour to get my brother and family from Iowa to spend a week with us. Should get lots of tractor stuff done ( you think or else we'll be going to craft shows and art museums or things of that nature which of course I'm really excited about. Anyway I'll give you a shout soon. Migraine

Hi Ol' Sport,

Good for you! Glad you get to see your family.

Sorry, we weren't home. This wife of mine never gets to get out of her computer chair and I just thought it was time to take her to supper and get her out of the house, even if it was only for an hour.

That is super news about the parts; I checked on my 966 today, and it is in the paint booth now takin' a red bath. Maybe I'll be able to drag 'er home one of these days in the not to distant furture.

Thanks,

Allan

Hey Migraine! Where in IA are they from? my absolute best friends live in Wa off of Anacortes on Guemes Island. I used to go out of King Salmon on Bristol bay Salmon fishing my summer away with them. Hard work! If you spend six weeks at sea with three people and the living space is the size of fullsize pickup bed you eather become very attached to those people or spend the rest of your days dispising anyone with similar names. I was lucky. I'll never have better friends than those in WA.

Sloroll. my brother lives in Oskaloosa Iowa 60 miles southeast of Des Moines. He and dad farm about 800 acres of corn and beans. He has been out here a couple times to tractor pull and show I'H. with me but I haven't seen his wife and two high schoolers for about 6 years. Lots of good people here in Wa. too and we go to Anacortes to jump on the ferry several times a year. I moved from Iowa to Wa. in 1984 so I don;t really know where to call home anymore. I just work with Binder stuff to keep part of my past alive. Try to go back there for harvest every few years but I've missed a bunch of years now. Maybe this fall. Migraine

I'm just a spit in the wind from Osky. I'm right in Grinnell. Have em stop by the airport sometime. always like a visit and a chance to throw something dead on the grill.

That'd be the air intake for the cab vent fan.
