I can't seem to get my ether injection system working on my 1086. its got power down to the soleid. when I hold the thing up side down it seems to work or at least the ball inside of it goes back and forth. any ideas? also do these tractors take special ether cans? what normally goes wrong with these systems or is it cheaper to just buy a new one? thanks

i think billyiron is on the right track. the line between the can and the manifold will corrode over time. may need to be blown out with air, or put on a new line from napa. the nozzle into the manifold may plug too. and as has been noted, use ether very sparingly.

Fry, if you have power to the soleniod and it doesn't function, replace it. The other posts are correct when suggesting that ether should be the last option. Fuel conditioner, proper timing, utilizing the block heater, and having serviceable batteries that will crank the engine at a speed that it will start should reduce or eliminate the need for ether. Yes I perfer not to use it, but this tractor will absoulutely not start cold or hot without ether. it takes a small shot and its up and running, it has good power and doesn't smoke, any ideas? thank you

Well, my guess is that the starting compression is low, the timing is off, or the injectors aren't releasing the fuel at the proper pressure. The low compression could be caused by a cracked or damaged compression ring, poorly seating valves, or even a leak through an injector fitting. I guess as long as it runs and does its job, it doesn't really need to be fixed, but I would be a little hesitant to run a diesel that needs ether to start it in summer. If it were fixed now, it would probably be a lot cheaper than later after the ether has taken its toll. I am sure a lot of other guys on the forum can give you some more specific info. Good luck!

Throw that ether injection system as far as you can But only after you have taken a sledge hammer to it. I worked at a IH dealer years ago we had to use a torch on 3 new tractors to melt the pistions ( what was left of them) out to rebuild the motors. Electric ether system stuck on. Oldest tractor had a little over 100 hours on it. One was a 766 with 5 hours on it

a good block heater is easier on the whole system. just the sound of ether makes me want to go the shop and get a rebuilt head for just in case. use a little #1 fuel in the winter and plug it in and she will fire every time.

My 1086 will only accept the small sized ether can. The bigger can will not work with it.
