I'm in the process of rebuilding the steering on my floppy front wheels H . I noticed in the books about a steering bolster wedge shim. My H doesn't have this wedge, whats it purpose.

the wedge doesn't have a thing to do with fixing the shimmy of worn bushings. it makes the tractor steer easier. it makes your m steering the same caster as the super m's. my introductory super m general sales bulletin says that the caster has been deceased from 1 1/2" to 7/8". this change reduces the effort required to turn the front wheels yet retains sufficient caster to induce "self recovery"after the turn is completed.

I will give you guys a challange get one of those shims and put thin side front and then reverse it and then tell me which side steers better. Have any one of you used one of them? Read why I-H did this on the Bs. Like i say talk to a front end alignment person.

Don't know anything about NASCAR and I don't think NASCAR know's anything about tractors but, I can read and the shim has front molded into it. The thin part goes to the front to set the wheels forward.

The wedges worked well steered much easier. We had one on the M made quite a difference. Be sure that the thick part is to the front as what you are doing is moving the wheels back. Production was changed early on the B to make it steer easier. There are dome who think that you move the wheels ahead. They should talk to a front end alignment person. One thing sure they would not work on a chassis for NASCAR.

Gene - Actually the THIN edge of the shim goes to the front. This effectively moves the front wheels ahead and closer in line with the pivot shaft and makes the tractor easier to steer.

Punch below for a photo of the wedge that was installed on my SH. (Note that "FRONT" is prominently cast right into the thin edge of the part...)

As the others have noted presence/absence of the wedge has little to do with steering slop. If the tractor has worn bushings, gears, etc. the wheels will shimmy with and without the wedge.

Robert The shim does help but the bolster and bearings needs to be in good shap.

The engineers thought the wedge would help remove some of the shakes in the front end by kicking the front wheels forward and out. Some say it helped but the best fix is to rebuild the bolster like you are doing.
