I'm confused about wiring an A regulator

The drawing of just the generator in the service manual for the A shows that the F terminal on the regulator (cutout relay?) is connected to the F post on the generator. But,the schematic for the entire wiring system shows no such wire at this point, only the wire from the field resistor in the light switch is connected to the field post on the generator. So, which is it? My tractor is a 6V, positive ground that looks exactly like the light switch and generator set up in the service manual with GEN, A and F terminals.

I think he made a mistake. With a cut-out field goes to field on the cutout. Bat on the cutout goes to the amp meter on the side that goes to the starter sw. ARM on the gen goes to the gen post on the cutout and the wire from the light sw with the resistor goes to the field on the cutout. I have 8 tractors As and Bs this way. They are all original set ups with the DELCO REMY cutouts and of course positive ground. The wire coming from the resistor post is for the hi-charge position on the light sw on the steering post. Been running them this way as per the wiring diagram in the manual for more yrs than i can remember.

Depends whether you are using a regulator or a cutout. And if a cutout, whether the tractor has lights. Here's the deal:

CUTOUT + LIGHTS: Connect gen “F” to the field resistor terminal at the light switch. (Nothing gets connected to cutout “F”.)

CUTOUT w/o LIGHTS: Connect gen “F” to cutout “F”.

REGULATOR (with or without lights): Connect gen “F” to regulator “F”

Hope this makes sense!

Bob,
I have the original setup w/ cutout relay. Is there an advantage to switching to a regulator? What is involved?

Thanks in advance.

Not much. With a regulator, it will still only put out a max of about 11 amps. Unless your tractor is used a lot heavier than most old tractors, you will rarely need to cut the charge rate back anyway.

Thanks, Bob. I took the cover off today and I have a cutout and not a regulator, and I have lights, so I now know exactly what to do.
