Took the 560 Low-crop to the field today to do some disking. Right away I see it was realy short on ponies. Once it lugged down it would go to popping and just die. I changed the timing and helped it a little but it seemed it was starving for fuel. I don't know nothin' about propane so I called Dale and he came right out, tinkered with the load screw, reset the timing. But we couldn't cure it. So after lunch his dad brought out a set of Autolite plugs and WOW, what a diffence, it didn't even sound the same! Throw out those Champions boys! I could't belive plugs were going to help because it started good and never missed. Just lugged down and went to popping, backfiring out the breather. Never too old to learn a new wrinkle.

I haven't bought a champion (except for for the chain saw no one else carries any other brands to fit it) since I beat my dad to the parts store to get new plugs for my old 2.2 liter dakota that thought it was an oil burner.

The real problem in reply to Nebraska Cowman, 05-04-2005 17:09:10
Three fourths of the problem with today's sparkplugs is today's gasoline. Not that that applies to a propane burner.

I'll bet Nebraska Cowman that if you would have put in new Champions in you would have had same result.
I have used NGK's who most small engine people swear by and have had nothing but problems. Put in Champions and no problems.
I guess somethings are better built nowdays and some are not.

So what the # for a autolite replacement for a champ D18 or D21. I am willing to give her a try. I know I have not had much luck with ACs in the last 5 years either. JON

3116 is what we put in. They are still one notch too hot for a propane burner but it's all we had. The 560 had D21s in it. Way too hot.

Could the wrong heat range plug have been the problem all along?

I knew that way back in the mid sixtys when i first started drag racing and found that the autolite could be good for up to a half second . People never could figure how i made them roadrunner run so good i used autolite plugs two heat ranges below the factory and cut the gap back by five thousanths . but i would not do that for the buckeye bears had to keep them boy running slower then the slowest road runner.

The only problem is that I have had the same happen in reverse. Back about ten years ago I bought autolite plugs from the local AC allis chalmers dealer and they did the same thing. My self over the last 30 years champs always have worked better than any other. I guess you have to see what works best in your tractor and go with it. But they run the best in my H. JON

If they (champions) ain"t no good then why are they still made? There are defects in everything, Nothing last forever! I have even bosch and autolites die on the job. We run champions in our farm tractors H, SM, 400, sometimes they last a year sometimes longer. The ones in my SM have been in for 15 years no problems.

I have heard nothing but complaining about Champions since they were bought out by the horrid Federal Mogul back in the late 80s.My guess is they did some serious cost cutting on their basic line in order to "Up sell" to their Truck plug,Platinum plug..etc.
One old time Champion J8 supporter from way back when even had a newspaper insert "newsletter" put in the local paper years ago to warn of the problems he saw with good ole Champion J8Cs.He basically stated "No more...I will only use AC or AutoLites." Champion blamed the reformulated fuel for the plugs failure, the customers blamed the Champions.I guess this is why most auto parts stores have to carry AC,Autolite,Champion,NGK,Bosch and ND just to satisfy everybody.

That's about the time that we quit using Champions. We are a lawn equipment dealer and it was about that time that we were having alot of trouble getting equipment to run. We had one customer bring his mower in once a month because he couldn't get it to start. Changed the plug and it would run fine. Switched to autolite's and we never had a problem again.

I know there's no connection, but still interesting that Champion is owned by Federal Mogul...that has filed for Chapter 11; and Autolite is owned by Honeywell...that is included in the Dow Industrial Average. Who would you rather have making a sparkplug for you?

Guess who SplitFire has make their plugs for them? Autolite! They just weld on a forked ground electrode! One thing about Autolite,a car magazine years back did a study and the Autolites had the hardest metal composition (long life) while Champions were the softest. This is why they are nickel plated....if they werent they would rust away at a scary rate.

The Autolite name has been swapped around at least 4 times. Before Honeywell,Allied Automotive owned them, and at one time Autolite was a Ford Motor Company brand.Somebody else owned them along the way as well..

Cowman, I worked the last three years in an auto repair shop and the boss wouldn't have a Champion plug on the place, told more horror stories about trying to get a "no start" going and he'd change the Champion plugs to Autolite, AC or Motorcraft and it would fire right up and run like a new car. Thanks to champions,I have bought alot of power equipment on the cheap.Even found a weedeater at the dumpster, and changed the plug when I got home, problem solved.Never liked em,I could fill a book with all the stuff that the only trouble was the champion plug. Was told it was some internal resistor failure and the jobber says its harsh handling at the warehouse.I just say no.
