I bought this tractor about 2 months ago. I tried to start it yesterday and it wouldn"t fire.

I did all the ususal things, points, condenser etc.

I noticed that the coil seemed to be putting out a weak spark. The coil looked like it had been recently replaced. I decided to replace it anyway. When I got it removed from under the holder, it showed that it was a 6 volt coil. I was told by the IH/Case dealership that the tractor used a 6 volt coil with a resistor?

I replaced the coil with a 12 volt, and the tractor runs like its spose to.

Is it ok to leave the 12 volt coil on the tractor?

If this tractor is spose to have a 6 volt coil, WHAT THE HELL WAS IH THINKING?

The idea is that they used a ballast resistor. The ballast resistor has lower resistance when it is cold, so when you first start it, the coil gets somewhere between 6 and 12 volts, for a hotter spark, but after the engine starts, the coil receives only 6 volts, for longer coil life. That was pretty common for tractors, trucks and cars in the first decade or so of using 12V systems.

My 300U had a 12V battery but the original 1955 6Volt coil with no resistor.Needless to say, thats why it didnt run when I bought it...the coil overheated and oil poured out.Replacing the coil with a 12V and the proper resistor solved that trouble (and I saved $300 off the purchase price because it didnt run).

May I ask what you got your 300U for?? We picked up one a month or so ago and payed $100 for it and we loaded it on the trailor useing the starter and first gear. When I got it home I played with it a little and drove it off the trailor and in to may shop to do a little TLC. Only trouble we have with it is that it steers worse then a big rig. Steering is very hard to turn.

Mine was $1500 (was $1800 originally). With U34 loader.Far from top shape,I'm still throwing money at it...and will continue for a while. One good thing....it starts immediately (even in sub zero)and runs like a champ.I wouldnt imagine every $1500 Ute or Farmall runs as well.In that respect I am thankful to the IH "Gods",that this one was blessed for a long, trouble free life.(well, before I got it...and now I'm playing catch-up! lol).

Well if you are useing a 12 volt battery you have to have a 12 volt coil or a ballast resistor if its a 6 volt coil. So yes if its 12 volts you are ok.

IH was thinking like the rest of the industry. I don"t think anybody made a 12v coil.

GM always used a 6v coil with an external resistor wire. That was so the could give the coil 12v for starting,, directly from the starter solenoid.

Ford used a 6v coil with an internal resistor, so they marked it 12v. They could not give it 12v for starting like GM. That is what you bought.

Somebody probably removed the resistor.

A 6v coil runs fine on 12v, but the higher voltage burns the points. Since the 12v coil has an internal resistor, it is fine to use if it will run.

I can't totally agree with that, my SM backfired like crazy till I put a resistor on it. Chrysler did the same thing with the external resistor, the key hit the coil with 12 volts when in start. Their resistor also has a hole in it for mounting and it looks just like the one our 806 had.

Yes they make 12 volt coils, but they are just like and look like 6 volt coils other then they has a resistor built in to them and that is what makes them a 12 volt coil
