Bad Battery?

YTers,
The battery on my Super C is constantly bubbling throught the vent caps. Even when the tractor is not running. When I got the tractor, the area under the battery was etched pretty bad (no battery box), so I guess it"s been going on for a while.

The battery is also a little weak; I charged it for several days, and it still will barely turn the engine over, just enough to start it.

I guess I should toss it and get a new battery?

I agree with the others time for a new battery and also time to check you chargeing system, a battery that bubbles is a sign of a chargeing system problem. Remember over chargeing is as bad or worse then under chargeing.

Bill - Bad battery indeed - time for a new one!

However from your description it sounds like the battery failed from overcharging.

Once you get a new battery installed watch the ammeter. With a fresh, fully charged battery the ammeter should indicate about 5 amps of charge after the engine's run at governed RPM for a few minutes. However if it continues to indicate a charge great than 10 amps or so, it's time for a new voltage regulator.

I would use a volt meter across the battery terminals to see if your generator or alternator
is overcharging your battery. Your regulator
may be defective. Check the electrolyte in each cell with a hydrometer to determine the battery
condition.

You do not want to over charge a new battery, it may void your warranty. Hal
