After two friends and I took a total of 12 H cyl heads in for MFlux, all were cracked. I had just about given up and was going to bite the bullet and spend 400 bucks for rebuilt head (welded). Then we found one more and VOILA. It's good. I talked to two tractor "engine mechanics and they said they usually use heads with small cracks because finding a good one is almost impossible. No S... Also be advised two of the cracked heads we found came off fairly good running tractors and were "gauranteed" to be good. I can believe that a tractor would run pretty good for a while with a cracked head, but I believe it would accelerate ring and valve/seat wear on the affected cylinder.

I have had H heads repaired for about $250-300. Most were minor cracks. $400 seems kinda steep.

I would just about bet that if you removed the heads from all of the currently running H Farmalls you would find cracks in approximately 75% of them. I hope and pray that you did not destroy those 12 heads.

Well I believe cracked heads run just fine, I don't magnaflux heads. If you can't see the crack it won't hurt you. Remember these are low compression and run cool.

Were these all cracked through the seats? When it gets hot those cracks may tend to close up. I've seen seats come loose but I don't think on an M or H.

I guess it scares me a little, all those good heads getting scrapped by people who don't know any better will result in a shortage in a few years.

I'll repeat again what I said a few weeks ago, if you magnafluxed a new H in 1944 you might have found cracks BEFORE it was ever even started! Little stress cracks are nothing to reject a head over.
