What was the 1959 460 hi utility made to be used for? How many of these tractors were made? I read somewhere something about shade grown tobacco, but we had 1 in southern Minnesota. My brother still uses this tractor. Tobacco wasn't grown there. Thanks in advance.

I have one, but I don't know the answer. If I was farming I would rather have the row crop. I bought it because I saw it on a salvage dealers lot, knew what it was and couldn't resist. The Hi-utility is basically a utility with longer spindles on the front axle and the 460 row crop rear end and wheels -- gearing and ground speeds are the same as the row-crop, I believe. Getting on and off is easier, it has a shorter turning radius than the row crop, provided the row crop has a WFE. There was also a 350 HU--My personal opinion is that IH was trying to cover all the bases, as other manufacturers had similr high clear tractors. I live in SW Kansas, don't know the history of the tractor, but it is likely local, no tobacco within 1500 miles of here. I would guess the production at 800-1000, but that is nothing more than a guess, based on the production of other IH "unusual" tractors.
