I"m new to TA"s, if they are in the tractor is it pretty much a move or don"t move situation, or can they be ok under light load but not moderate load.

I"m looking at a tractor with a TA and want to be sure it isn"t bad, before I buy it.

Thanks
Steven Garrett

Thanks Guys,
I like the roll back test. I read that a TA out of the tractor should only rotate one direction if it was good. This makes sence to me, the tractor shouldn"t roll back if the TA is holding corectly. I"m a bit afraid of locking the brakes up while going down the road in 4th gear. Especially on a tractor I don"t know or own yet.

Thanks All, I"m going to look in the morning.
Steven

I have considered buying two IH (350u and 400)tractors in this era over the phone with pix only.

Kinda funny. Both sellers when asked about the TA said it was just fine when the lever was ahead but the tractor stopped moving when lever pulled back. Told both of them that that meant the TA was out. Guy with the 350U argued with me about this and many other things including he never sent pix. Didn't buy that one. Guy with the 400 didn't argue was reasonable on the begining price and that one is in my yard.

Sellers will try to tell you anything on the TA.

Fact is if the tractor stops moving when the lever is pulled back the TA is OUT. Not kinda out or sorta out or half out it is out. Old time IH mechnanic that I know said there were two types of TA's. Those that were out and those that were going out.

Try the TA in all gears, if its good it should work in the all, if its weak you should see it when in the high gears, also you can use the brakes when in high gear but be careful that can cause you to go side ways fast if you hit them to hard or just one grabes

Dunno how much of an "acid test" this would be, but it's a neat feature of the mechanical TAs. This is a trick my dad taught me when we were picking stone with the 560:

Go up an incline steep enough that the tractor will roll backwards if you push the clutch. Go slow. Push the clutch in halfway. The tractor should stop and shouldn't roll back down the hill. IMHO, that's the sign of a good TA unit.

4 th road slow to idle in middle on road and give her the gas and lock the brakes together and get her to lug, if shes going to slip, then is when it usually will....if its a bigger tractor with the hydraulic one then try it when its cold, not up to temp
goodluck
