Doug--couldn"t get E-Mail to work. Anyway, the holes were just above the rear main bearing about two inches and spread out about 3 inches. They were clean holes that opened into the crankcase just below the cylinder, allowing oil to splash out through them. Never did find out what they were for. since they are in front of the flywheel, couldn"t be locator dowel holes, unless the engine was originally intended for industrial or pump use and had different attachments. This is pure speculation on my part. Hope you git "r done.

My son had the same problem. Leaked big time. Changed the seal--still leaked bad. Second tear-down he discovered two holes in the back of the block which should have some sort of pin or plugs in them, but did not. Two open holes. He threaded the holes and put plugs in them. No more leaks.

The oil seal is just a simple felt seal, The crank was turn .10 under when we overhauled it. Someone told me to goop the seal up with silicone or to even boil the felt first.

Groove in crank ? Rear main bearing ? Don't know what seal looks like but is it facing right direction? Just guesses..... .....semi educated.
